Rods & Rails 2010 Perris Ca

Tinkmomma needed some time to relax. After considering all the options I chose to take all 4 kids out to Perris CA for the annual Rods and Rails show. The last time I was at Orange Empire Railway was about two years ago. The place hasn't changed a bit, but this time it was also full of classic cars. I guess they also host the potato festival, and the classic motorcycle festival at the same time... but all the kids cared about were trains, trolleys and classic cars. So... on with the pics

They wanted a picture of the sign

and I wanted pictures of the cars

I tried to get a shot of this car with a purple gorilla but some kids got in the way... where are their parents?

For me there are few things that honestly compare to a classic car show.

    They loved anything with flames

I laughed when I realized their heads follow the line of the car!

On rare occasions you come across an English classic

    T Bird

If you think about it... 3 generations of cars in 1 picture.

Literally cars everywhere you looked. It wasn't "huge" but it definately had a few cars.

A classic, and the girls loved the color.

not my style but some people like them.

Since we were in the area we decided to visit Ward Kimball's old wheels...

    Now back to the cars

    I love the 30's and 40's styles

    it had flames

    rat rod

    It's a butterfly

because the kids were in the way and it was too beautiful to pass up!

    Again they liked the color

with a really detailed paintjob (see headlamp below)

    wow

That would be the iconic Mercury!

And just as we look up they had to pull this trolley because it broke down!

I am not a fan of the Lowrider style but I appreciate that they are preserving these classic cars.

This should be in the Hollywood section of DCA

    Another classic

Some cars had various amounts of information. I always enjoy this. I took the time to show the kids just how bad off the cars were... and how much time someone took to bring them back to life.

Even more cars... we'll get there in a moment.

    more classics

Back inside, this really set the tone seeing the trolleys and the cars in the same spot.

no rope up so I snapped a quick pick of them sitting down.

Some of them looked like buses, which was weird.

Now we made it to the other lot

    Another old gentlemen

Tell me wouldn't they look amazing in Hollywood...

Yes... Disneyland fans know what this is... and yes they will eventually restore it.

    Another classic

The walk to the engine house is the only real "walk" on the campus. It's building isn't near anything else.. but it is worth it.

The scale of this thing is monstrous
All they could do is stare and point.

And right next to it was this classic!

I spotted her in the corner before we left!

    I love this view

    Korean War Army truck.

And now for a little riding time!

My daughter asked if this was Santa in disguise

    they fit!

    a control shot

She was a bit shocked when it started moving...

After we made it back they went running when they realized we'd do the other train too!

talk about exciting... riding a real train daddy! Now for the final ride

    Another control shot

I didn't get an outside shot because they had to get going.

I felt really lucky to be riding something like this.

So we got there sometime around 1130am, left sometime around 330pm... lots of cars, lots of trolleys, lots of trains and lots of memories. This car show is held once a year, and it will likely become a tradition.

Great photos, Skip! Loved seeing the old Hollywood cars (the trolleys, not the hot rods!)

I love the Hotrods too... let me know when you are out here because we really need to do a mass trip out there (maybe even a MC Meetup!)

Its been... at least 20 years since we've been there. I bet its a lot different now. Back then there was hardly anything there! My husband is a train nut. Maybe someday I can talk him into going down again.

It is an amazing place that I'd say has equal emphasis on trolleys and trains. It also has an extensive boneyard, and cars in various stages of restoration (or deterioration if they are being cannibalized).

I would HIGHLY recommend going in the cooler months, Perris gets really really hot and the boneyard doesn't have a lot of shade. The added bonus is that you also have working trolleys and a working train that you can ride via an all day pass (admission itself is free if you just want to look around the property).
