Question LAX ENCOUNTER restauant - lighting question

    Hello there Micechatters ....

Perhaps someone can help me out here.

There is a lighting technique used to illuminate ceilings, by creating an inverted double layering. Where lights hidden can light up the section across.

So ... if you take a look at the LAX Encounter restaurant ..
    http://disneyandmore.blogspot.com/20...urant-wdi.html ..........
you'll see what WDI and Eddie Sotto, who were commissioned to refurbish this 1961 LA Landmark, and created a lighting technique .. which is fairly common in many building applications.

I just can't figure out what the lighting technique is called.

The blog describes it as - "The amoeba-shaped lighting structures embedded in the ceilings" - But that's not the clear, technical, term.

    Thanks for your help

Are you talking about the lighting in the soffits? Or the fixtures themselves?
Amnesia used to be my favourite word, but I forgot it.

    Thank you.

You helped me enormously with just the word "soffits". At first .. my google search showed primarily under the eves of a standard roof over a home.

But then I tried "Soffit Lighting" .. and BINGO .. got what I was looking for. This site was the clincher -
Light*Waves Concept: Photo Gallery :: LED Lighting

And I imagine the fixtures themselves are a long strip that runs all along inside the inner "soffit" corners.

So it appears the proper technical term is Soffit Lighting. I do wonder what the name is for the lighting strips. That is, if they are strips the run around the whole perimeter.

I think I may have found my answer here - LED Rope Lighting:
Rope Light: 2-Wire Steady Burn Rope Lighting, 3-wire and 5-Wire Chasing Rope Lights

So ... I guess if I told a contractor to do a few rooms in my house with that type of lighting in the ENCOUNTER ... I'd say I want the ceiling rebuilt to contain "Soffit Lighting" and use "LED Rope Lights" to illuminate it.

I would hazard a guess that the restaurant uses some sort of architectural LED wash lighting. There are tons of companies that make them now, with the ability to change colours and the like. You can buy inexpensive versions at IKEA now, too. Depending on the room, simple rope lights may not be enough to wash the whole ceiling. Have a look at these:

    American DJ Homepage
    Product - Tripix™
    Product - Extube™
    Product - Easypix™ (Coming soon)
LED Cove Light Fixture - iColor Cove EC from Philips Color Kinetics
High Intensity LED Light Fixture - iColor Cove MX Powercore from Philips
Outdoor Wall Lights - ColorGraze Powercore from Philips
Lighting solutions for Theatre, Film & Television Studios and Architectural spaces : ETC
Amnesia used to be my favourite word, but I forgot it.

IKEA! I some how missed that one. I'm going to have to check it out the next time I am at the place.

Thanks Exprmnt! That is a wealth of knowledge ..... I appreciate it immensely!

I have some reading to do there .... I'll have to see what they have that can follow rounded curves ... like the custom job in the ENCOUNTER restaurant.
