I'm not sure who made it today. I am in the process of uploading/editing my photos now. I'll just say it was an absolute blast. There are a few "minor" things I'd like to submit as suggestions via email but overall it went well.

Calibration started at 10am as they launched medicine balls and dialed in the weight and sling lengths necessary to hit the targets. This is when some learned and others burned. There was a lot of "learning" in the test and adjust portion.

Thankfully they had a few stations to occupy the kids before the pumpkins went flying

Of course probably the best table was the hands on one. The kids managed to build catapults out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a plastic spoon.

Ok so... a couple vids of the fun

The Dragon, close target, proved to be the most popular.

    Misfire

Drop Weight which almost fell over due to the power. It launched that pumpkin over all the targets and almost hit the fence a good 20 yards from the farthest target.

Decent range, wouldn't call it "Long" but it hit mid field.

And of course the Grand Finale... which reminded me of the opening scene of Gladiator.

He really wanted a picture with this one

The girls loved "The Pink One"... ironically a Da Vinci design originally intended to be wall mounted.

    She wanted her own photo

Traditional twisted rope based catapult. The problem with this design is you can't easily adjust the range unless you modify the length of the arm (which was also a modification Da Vinci explored).

    Posing with Yoda

FYI This was sponsored by Discovery Science Center. They announced the plans for the Star Wars exhibit starting in mid November. They also handed out flyers with $5 off coupons. I see a Discovery Center trip in our immediate future!

For anyone who missed it this year... there is always next year. If possible I would LOVE to build and compete. It's free to enter the competition. The "points" are based on accuracy not distance. Farther targets are worth more but you don't get points for how far you launch a pumpkin. You only score if you hit the target.

Re: The Pumpkin Launch of 2011 Cal State Fullerton

I know on they have various pumpkin launching contests in other states, but you don't see it much in California. I honestly wish this became a competition among the colleges.CSUF has been doing it for the past 4 years and each year they learn something new. Last year they banned air compression because an air cannon took out the scoreboard... Now the competition is based on accuracy more then distance. Here's hoping other college campuses use CSUF as an example. It's great for the community, gets kids excited about science, gives students a chance to apply their studies, and allows companies to scout potential talent.
