Before I begin let me give you a little history about myself. I do promotions part-time and DJ (mix music not talk) full-time for a radio group in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A few months ago my radio group was approached about a contest promoting The CW's 'Vampire Diaries' and their NEW show 'The Secret Circle'. This contest would place DJs from cities across the US against one another for a trip to Vancouver Canada to visit with the cast on the set of The Secret Circle. The contest consists of photos of our DJ in their best Vampire attire, and a short audio clip of their best Vamp-voice (script included of course).
Bree is the mid-day girl from our Top 40 station (who’s also my fiancé) and was our first choice. Here are the photos she submitted.
The country voted for their DJs and Salt Lake City won by a landslide (apparently). I attribute the bombardment of votes to our history of Twilight fans. (Stephanie Meyer having gone to school in Utah, fans here feel “connected” to her) but I digress.
Months had passed before we were told the results of the contest. Then one random Wednesday afternoon we received an email inviting Bree and I to the studio in Canada to visit the set and film some segments promoting the show. We were very excited, and found ourselves on a plane the following Tuesday.
Despite the rain we were happy to find Vancouver warmer than when we left Utah. Our taxi driver had a lot to say about the hotel we were booked at. “Anyone who is anyone stays at the Sutton Place Hotel”. I guess John Travolta was in town recently and had made quite an impression.
That evening we trolled the streets of Vancouver dinning, shopping, etc.
The next morning we met with our publicity rep from the CW and were driven to the lot where the show is filmed. We learned these are the same stages where Smallville was filmed years earlier (Stages 7 & 1). We were whisked away to Stage 7 to meet our film crew who would be following our every move. Along the way we passed stages 2-6 where the new series ‘Alcatraz’ was filming. After some quick direction we were let loose on Stage 7 to poke and prod each scene. The stage we were in houses each character’s bedroom and the first floor of Jane’s house (the main character’s mother).
We inspected each room in the house. I even left my business card on the desk in their office (a little Easter Egg for me).
After a few hours roaming we found our way to Stage 1 where they were filming that day. If you watch the show, Stage 1 houses the Abandon House, Garage, and High School Hallways. The stage was buzzing with activity. To set up today’s filming we learned Shelley Hennig’s character Diana has arranged a school dance/casino night to raise money to fix the school’s gym that Faye had damaged in a fire she created. We watched as the school hallways were flooded with students and teachers alike enjoying their “mocktails” and gambling the night away. Diana’s character interacts with a new student (who may be a new love interest)
Of course we were not allowed to take any photos inside while they were filming, sorry.
Shelley Hannig (Diana Meade)
Chris Zylka (Jake Armstrong)
Jessica Parker Kennedy (Melissa Glaser)
Grey Damon (Lee LaBeue)
We broke for lunch and hung out with the cast. We interviewed Shelley Hennig for the radio station, schmoozed, snapped a few pics, and filmed some closing segments for this promo thing that will play on the CW later. We said our goodbyes and were whisked back to our hotel for drinks and dinner. The next morning we flew back to Utah and found ourselves back at work within hours like nothing happened at all. Oh the cleverness of me!
