Finally you all in California get to experience what we Floridian's have been seeing for the past 30+ years. I've seen many launches up close and quite a few from our back yards, front yards, school yards, places of employment, and roadsides over the years. I was very, very fortunate to be chosen by the NASA lottery to view the last shuttle launch from the now closed Astronaut Hall of Fame, about 13 miles from launch pad 39A. Here's a photo I have of the crowd at that location.
It was estimated that 2,000 people were there. All three of NASA's on property viewing locations which include the this location, Spaceport USA/Visitor Center, snd the Cape Canaveral Air Station sites were at capacity well before 6am. It was estimated that well over a million people showed up in the surrounding areas from New Symrna Beach to the north the Melbourne in the south to see this last launch.
The shuttle in the background of the photo is a full scale mock up so it really gives you an idea of just how large the Space Shuttles are.
I'll have to send in a trip report and photos on my next visit to the KSC Visitors Center.
