    06/12 Alton Towers Trip Report

On Monday I visited the finest theme park in the United Kingdom, Alton Towers, which I had never visited before in face of the fact that it is only an hour down the road. My opinion of it when I left the park was that it is just as good as Busch Gardens in Florida or even better.

The park is well themed thanks to the financial and creative support it gets from it's parent company The Tussaud Group (they also own the Madame Tussaud wax works all over the world) and its parent's parent company Dubai something or other. That company is amazingly rich, thats all I know.

The park also has some of the finest coasters in Europe, even the world. Air, is a coaster where you lie horizontally in a Superman-position, and fly around - the feeling is extraordinary. Oblivion is a dive machine similar to SheiKra at Busch, and my favourite, Nemesis is one of the best coasters I have ever ridden. Most recently opened was Rita, a launch coaster which sends you to 100 mph in about two seconds? Something like that.

I always imagined it would be cool if Disney bought the park, because all they would have to do is spruce up some of the building facades and add a few characters walking around - the park is kept immaculately clean and I didn't spot one off-the-shelf ride. Okay, there was a Tea Cups rip off, but what foreign park hasn't ripped off the Tea Cups? Also, Alton Towers has a real castle at the center of the park - the castle has been around for centuries, and a theme park was built around it in the 1980s. In fact, Disney's FastPass system actually originated here - officials from the Disneyland Resort visited Alton Towers in 1998 for a visit, and the park was more than happy to swap ideas. So all you FastPass haters can blame us Brits.

My one complaint? The park is humongous - far bigger than Epcot, which up until Monday was the largest park I've been to. Maybe it's because it is set in the country and it has many hills, or maybe it's because all the rides are spread out so far apart that I needed a good foot soak when I got home. Here's a few pictures.

Me and my we-love-to-pose friends in front of a passing coaster on Air.

Us Brits love our log flumes...

    ...I think I'm the exception.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful parks I've visited. The castle in the hills:

    Alton Towers' tribute to Disneyland

The 'tributes' just keep coming in their interpretation of Main Street

    Walking through the castle

I love B&M flyers...though are there any parts of "come out of the drop and dive into a vertical loop" since Alton's coasters are all short? If not you missed the coolest coaster feeling ever.

In fact, Disney's FastPass system actually originated here - officials from the Disneyland Resort visited Alton Towers in 1998 for a visit, and the park was more than happy to swap ideas. So all you FastPass haters can blame us Brits.
Nice to know there is a face for my hate.

Though I can't believe you skipped the Willy Wonka ride.

Mhm... I heard it was rubbish anyway. A couple friends did go on it, and basically it was just a boatride past some carboard cut-outs and some limited AAs (they called them robots ) then it stopped, then you go in an elevator which shakes, then you leave.

I've always thought a Willy Wonka ride would make the perfect dark ride if done correctly. Sad to hear this one isn't up to snuff. If you took a boat ride down the chocolate river and saw all the sites and sounds of wonka's land I'd ride that over and over.

There is Drayton Manor which is about 20min ago, it's like Alton Towers' stupid little brother. Dirty, crappy carnival rides, nothing to rave about at all. There are the other parks owned by the owners of Alton Towers, like Thorpe Park (awesome), Chessington (mediocre but better than Drayton Manor).. erm that's about it.

    coughblackpoolcoughcough.

very cool trip report speedway, and yeah drayton is a very scary dump, the queue for shockwave is just a death trap, and the ride is no better ( and hurts, especially when the seat springs up when you get off)

out of interest did you see henry hound? they took the costume out of storage last year for the first time in 12 years, needless to say i was running round in circles excited.

alton also USED to have a parade, it was one of the first things tussauds got rid off (1990/1ish?) though they added alot of great stuff, the downer is that they let the landscaping go, the place was orginally gardens and they just didnt care, now the place feels alot more run down than it did 10 years ago, god i feel old saying that!

out of interest how many mice chatters live within a day trip distance of the park?

    (edited for my shocking grammer)

    I didn't mention Blackpool for a reason.

Nope, didn't see Henry Hound. Sorry
I can't believe Tussauds let the landscaping go! All I saw was picturesque beautiful sprawling gardens, especially the valley west of the castle. If the landscaping was better before Tussauds - well, it must have been jaw dropping because what is there now is amazing.

I live within an hour of Alton Towers.

Re: 06/12 Alton Towers Trip Report

i only ever went to the park once before tussauds bought it out. (year before the minetrain and gloomy wood were added) and had a picnic in the gardens, they were spotless and truly beautiful, slowly over they years they have been neglected (some areas more so than others) and areas are not cleared of debris or fallen leaves, the gardens always look cool from the path to the castle but that area gets alot of attention. maybe its improved since i last went(apparently they are now hireing in cheap labour from abroad to work behind the scenes, maybe they got some more gardeners)

the towers have been getting worse (in terms of rubbish upkeep and graffiti) and more people are complaining, maybe someones done something finally (for 30 a ticket they better do! i remember when it was 12 full price!)

and heres henry (after smoking some)!

btw, i live within an hour (ish) of alton as well,

Re: 06/12 Alton Towers Trip Report

If I ever make it to England, I really want to visit Alton Towers and Thorpe Park. I was watching a thing on TV last night about thrill rides and they talked about Air and Oblivion.

BTW... I love all your England World Cup jerseys!
