    I grew up living in Downey and I remember my mom taking my brother and I on the bus for a day at Knotts. Ahhhhhhhh, what memories. I remember my long hours at Jungle Island playing hide and go seek with my brother. Man that was fun. I also remember the lagoon with the paddle wheeler. One of my favorites was Knotts Berry Tales, I loved the theme song. It was a shame that they took it out. I also remember gas powered cars that were located in the parking lot, on the west side of Beach Blvd. It traversed the entire length of the parking lot and then back to the starting point and the best thing is that there were no tracks either. What fond memories.

    If everyone here does not know this, there is a company called Extinct attractions.com that has dvd's of a lot of Disneyland's gone attractions, but there is a dvd on Knotts Berry Tales too. I will be getting it shortly.

    What about StudioK? Does anyone remember that? It was over by the exit to Montezuma's Revenge...I never went inside, but I remember wondering about what it was...a dance club or something?

    Also, I am sure this ride was mentioned, but I can't match the name with the ride. Overwhere Supreme Scream is located...before supreme Scream was XK1 (the flight simulator where you could control your right and left rolls) and then before that was "the red ride." The ride consisted of about 20 ride compartments in a circle. You got into a compartment sitting straddle style, and the ride started to spin flat...but then the center of the ride would raise and tilt the entire ride verticle like a ferris wheel except that you were upside down at the top. Just a carnival ride but I was crazy about it...

    I remember standing in line for Soap Box Racers and one of my favorite things to listen to was the commentary each time the cars were dispatched. It was Doodle Weavers, from Spike Jones fame, doing his "Dance of the Hours"
    commentary:

    "And there they go, it's car #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, Jack. Jack, hit me again dealer, Oh no, no, no, no.....".

    Or something like that.

    That was the Loop Trainer, better known as the Enterprise (also the name it used to have at Magic Mountain, when they had one). The only other one I can think of in a permanent CA park is Great America, called the Orbit--if it's still there. Others remain at various parks across the country, but you're right... it's getting a bit tougher to find.
    Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

    I know there was an attraction at Knott's that was similar to the Grinder Gearworks attraction at Six Flags Magic Mountain, does anyone know the name of it?

    It was the Whirlwind. I believe it actually had two incarnations... the first was, as you mentioned, the classic Himalaya/Music Express/Grinder Gearworks. Then it was redone in the "flying bobs" style (although I believe it retained the same name "Whirlwind").
    Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

    Oops... my bad. I mixed up the names Grinder Gearworks with Atom
    Smasher
    . I also seem to recall that Grinder was also once called Turbo... and I was thinking it was still being called that, and that Grinder was the Himalaya. All these names sound so very interchangeable, don't you think? So hard to keep track.

    In any case, you are perfectly correct. Propeller Spin at Knott's was a Round Up (not sure of the exact manufacturer, it was a fairly large sized Round Up that I can swear went higher than the 45 degrees that SFMM's does), and was located essentially in the same spot as Perilous Plunge is now. Sorry for the confusion. My previous post was talking about the ride Knott's had that was similar to Atom Smasher.

    Hmmmmm... I never realized that Knott's and SFMM at one time had so many similar flat rides. At one point, they each have/had (trade names listed): Round Up, Himalaya, Tilt a Whirl, Enterprise, Trabant, Teacups, Sea Dragon, Scrambler, Dodge 'ems... anything else I forgot?
    Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

    StudioK was a outside dance club that was a lot of fun. When I would take girls to Knott's, we would always spend some time there. I remember a lot of radio tie-ins.

    I visited Knott's last month after many years away. So much has been said in this thread, I would love to write 10 paragraphs...

    Jungle Island (and all that came with it)
    Gasoline cars at the end of parking lot (were dangerous and TOO fun for a kid)
    Soapbox Racers - riding it over and over before closing when there was no line
    Devil and the volcano (remember looking and wondering while my mom shopped)
    Burro rides
    Woman's kicking leg out window
    Archery (showed many friends who never knew it was there)
    Berry Tales
    Ghost Town - now feels like half the area it was, with a new park built right up to it's edge
    The life of the roaring 20's area (NO life when I was there last)
    Open spaces which let you breathe
    Areas that had nothing directly to do with making money!

    They're opening a TGI FRIDAYS across from Mrs Knott's chicken dinner for goodness sake!

    Knott's was special, but it's almost dead now. It' really now a crappier Magic Mt, with small bits of charm. So sad...

    Whirlwind was rethemed with cloud shaped cars and called greased lightning.

    Well there was Gypsy Camp and Jungle Island..and in Fiesta Village there was O'L MAC DONALD'S FARM, A SEAL POOL, AND the El Cinema Grande.
