SD Zoo is great! We've been SD Zooogical Society members since 1994. As for the Zoo, do not miss "The Heart of The Zoo". Really a wondeful area, you can take quite awhile to just explore it and enjoy the atmosphere. Also, the "Children's Zoo" is very nice, sometimes they have new babies in the nursery area, very cute. I also like the camels, elephants and rhinos, also, the polar bear area is really nice. Almost forgot, how could I forget Pandas! See the panda exhibit.
A good way to get an overview is to take the bus tour around the zoo. It will give youa good overview of most every area of the zoo. There's also something called the "Kangaroo Bus" where you follow the same bus route as the tour bus, but you can get off and on at various stops.
If you like animals, you will love the SD Zoo, it is Great!
Hey all, I am planning on going to the San Diego Zoo for the first time.
Any reviews? What to look for? What is not to be missed?
Have to second what's been said, it's an AMAZING experience, one of the best zoos in the world. I've been a member of it (perhaps visiting enough to be considered almost a denizen of it) for many years, would love to answer any questions you have.
General comments: plan on doing A LOT of walking, oftentimes up and down inclines. It's built in the hills/canyons of Balboa Park so it's not just a lot of horizontal walking (because it's huge) but because of the elevation differences. You can follow their map suggestion for the easiest approach, so don't let that scare you off.
If you're someone who likes to do more than just walk past each animal, and like to spend some time, you will find it hard to see everything, so you might want to make a mental checklist (oooh boy HUMMINGBIRDS!!!, oh well whatever elephants <yawn>, that sort of thing).
The animals will be most active before 10-11, and after 4. Basically, they don't like spending $ on sunscreen and instead choose to chill most of the day. The bus tour is an excellent way to get an orientation for a first-time visitor.
Must sees: polar bears and hippos have tanks you can see underwater, tigers orangs and gorillas have expansive naturalistic enclosures you can see them quite well in, the PANDAS (go there first or late in the day to minimize the line waiting, just like Disneyland), and <fill in blank of your fave animals>.
zoo is awesome...wild animal park, not so awesome. (that's just my opinion...)
I once did what they called their Photo Safari, where you went out in the bed of a truck into the enclosures. Looking right now at the pics on my wall. Highlights included having a giraffe rest his neck on my shoulder, and seeing how different a rhino appears eating out of your hand, then the photos suggest.
I think they still do it, and it's pricey, but a heck of a lot cheaper than a real safari.
But if you do the normal stuff, you do need to be more into it, the average visitor will find the zoo much more interesting. The animals, however, clearly prefer the Wild Animal Park, especially with all that, ahem, doing of the wild thing they like to do out there...
I agree with the Wild Animal Park, you have to go! My wife and I love it. It's almost like taking a Jurassic Park tour only the animals don't eat the tourists.

I am also a passholder and I love the zoo. It's beautiful but it's easy to get tired quickly. It has so many ups and downs , so I do recommend using the skyfari. The Wild Animal park is also great, and the lion exhibit destroys the zoo's horrible lion exhibit.
Now, I'll turn that little mouse's dream into a nightmare Fantasmic!
I love both parks! At the zoo, you for sure want to hit the pandas, the polar bears, and the tigers. I recommend doing the bus for the first time, too, because it will drive you past things you don't necessarily want to spend time hiking out to see (like all the various types of antelope, etc.). The children's area is very cute, too. Check out the naked mole rats and the otters over there.
the zoo makes me sad. We usually do the bus tour, I think there is a skyway up to the far area, then we leave,
I really enjoyed the wild animal park though. We did the photo safari and it was amazing. I didn't pay for it, but there were 8 of us and the person who did pay paid for the extra tickets as well so we could have the truck to ourselves.
Before the tour started we walked around a bit and it was a very nice park.
