Haunted Gold Mine at San Fran Fisherman's Wharf

Is the Haunted Gold Mine walkthrough at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf still around? I was up north a few months ago and looked around for it but didn't find it. It was kitschy but a fun novelty for kids, it'd be a shame for a unique themed attraction to be replaced by another Starbucks or other chain store.

I would love to know if it's still there myself, cuz I'll be visiting SF at the end of this month. I remember going in there once back in the early 90's and it was cheesy, but FUN! If anyone has any clue to the Haunted Gold Mine still being there, please let me and Vfire know!

I am very sorry to report that the Haunted Goldmine is closed. There is now a Rain Forest Cafe in its place. If you are feeling nostalgic there is a Haunted Goldmine simulator ride at Pier 39. My office is right down the street. I had found memories as a youngster in the Haunted Goldmine.

That's a damn shame that they got rid of the Haunted Gold Mine. I would have much rather they ditched the wax museum instead. The Gold Mine was a nice kitschy attraction themed well to San Francisco's mythical past. I remember taking my nephews there when they were in elementary school, and we had a great time. We took the elevator shaft to the "bottom" of the mine and they were completely immersed in the illusion. The elevator shook and creaked, while lights flashed through the wood planks of the elevator to signify that we were going deep underground. It was a fun, interactive walkthrough. And so now there's a Rainforest Cafe, which one can find at many malls thus removing a local flavor of the Wharf. Shame on the Fong family for getting rid of a unique attraction.

I never got to ride it. But I also remember there being a 1906 Earthquake attraction in the same area too. You rode little cable cars.

Yes, I remember that one as well, but didn't ride it at the time. I think there's a small aquarium where it used to be...

Wasn't the Haunted Gold Mine 2 stories? I think I went on this back in 1993-94. We had a blast running through there. I went back to San Francisco with my wife about 2 1/2 years ago looking for this same thing and could not find it. Sad to see it go.

I think the two stories was an illusion provided by the "elevator" but I could be wrong, it was a while ago. It was a blast to go through and it's a shame to see it go. I won't be going to that wax museum or Rainforest Cafe... was never very interested in either anyway anywhere.

I remember a large staircase up to the floor. Maybe it wasn't 2 stories, but maybe it was just only on the 2nd story of the building.

Everyone is correct. The elevator portion of the attraction was a simulator. However there was a portion of the walkthrough that would take you up stairs. Does everyone remember the “electric chair” illusion?

I know the Fong family through my company and I lobbied to keep the attraction open. Unfortunately after a short run it lost a considerable amount of money and they had no option other than selling out.
