For the past few years the Don Diego statue has been "decorated" to fit the theme of that year's fair.

Great TR. You guys didn't get any fried artichokes?
I swear that the fairs in socal are better than the ones in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara county.

I'm a die hard fair goer who goes for any fair ride except for Speed and Sky Flyer. The Evolution ride is number one though.

One recommendation, Colimas, it's off Pier View down by the actual pier, just ask a Marine the majority of them know where it is.

And congrats on the little one.

Re: San Diego County Fair - 2008

Thank you folks for all the nice posts! One of the things that is endearing about a county fair (even in a city like Del Mar) is that there is more than a little baling wire and duct tape holding the event together. It's a lot more home-grown than the theme parks we are used to, and that sort of takes me back to a simpler time. One may or may not agree with theming the statue out front, but it typifies the old-fashioned can-do of the fair, in how they dressed him. The football is secured in his hand with a zip-tie, the standard issue helmet does not begin to fit, and the jersey had been sectioned to fit his torso. Small town charm in a greater San Diego area with a population of nearly 3 million people.

Somehow I can see you floating on an inner tube, cocktail in hand, 'round and 'round your personal lazy river. Good times!

techskip, below, is right. Next time you're in the neighborhood, we'll aim you at several local eateries that have huge portions of fair-like food.

Colimas does, indeed put out some serious food! And, if you used to frequent Colimas, you may well have been our store, since we've been there for around 13 years. Most of the military knew us as the One Hour Photo downtown when you were here. We're just a gift/souvenir store now, and located one very short block from Colimas, which moved a block west since your days here.

What a great trip report! Looking at your pictures has made me excited for the LA County Fair, which I go to religiously every year! It's the only time of the year I actually like eating fried foods . And of course there's the tons of things I buy that I can't live without, that amazingly once I get them home, I find out I can live without

    Thanks for the report!

I am not a huge fan of fairs. And I am dreading that the oc fair is approaching, since it is usually my little sister who makes me go.
Great TR and thanks for sharing. I feel that some pics were a fairly good demonstration of the generic rides and food stands, as most might be identical to those at the oc fair.

Great TR! I love county fairs. I can't wait for the LA county fair. As for the Don Diego statue, what's not classy about badly fitting helmets and footballs attached with zip ties?

That is a great way to end a scary ride!

I grew up going to the California State Fair and have missed it for the last 5 years. This almost made me book my airfare to go up there! Of course I would not have the awesome views of the ocean that you had.

    Great report.
