DreamWorks Characters Headed to TV, Theme Parks

Quote:
At an investor's conference on Thursday, DreamWorks Animation studio execs detailed a plan of new business ventures to lessen the studio's dependence on production of only two animated films a year, according to the LOS ANGELES TIMES.

Popular characters will be headed to TV specials for NBC and other networks, and a new show about the MADAGASCAR penguins will debut on Nickelodeon in March. DreamWorks is also licensing characters out for theme park attractions in Dubai and Singapore. The premiere of SHREK THE MUSICAL on Broadway this Sunday could only the first of many theater productions, should it prove successful.

The company looks to earn as much as $60 million in revenue from various TV projects, offsetting the downturn in the home video business.

Despite selling an anticipated 10 million copies of KUNG FU PANDA on DVD in the fourth quarter, it was short of what Wall Street expected. "The home video market is maturing and has recently been hurt by the economic downturn," Chief Operating Officer Ann Daly said. "The current recession and lack of consumer spending domestically [are] having a dramatic impact."

Most analysts thought the Panda hit film would sell at least 12 million units.

I don't see the musical succeeding. I mean, Shrek is supposed to mock Fairytale Musicals, no be one.

If only the general public made such distinctions. This thing could easily coast on even a fraction of the folks that have spent over $2 billion at the box office alone.
