Snow Day at Mormon Rocks CA.

Please realize this was a spur of the moment plan. Saturday was my daughter's 1st birthday and thankfully one of my best friends was in attendance. He mentioned how he took his family up to Mormon Rocks the Thursday prior and it was covered in snow. I had wanted to take the kids up to the snow but lack chains (or a powerful vehicle since it's a minivan) so Big Bear had been out of the question. Within moments we made plans to meet the next day... road trip...

So the plan was to head to Rancho Cucamonga to the giant Bass Pro shop. They had Santa, and my friend needed to do a bit of shopping. From there it would be off to Mormon Rocks. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to snap photos of Bass Pro... but if you make it out there that store is AMAZING. Tinkmomma did snap one of the kids and Santa

Our shy little girl once again didn't want to be in the photo. Sadly Bass Pro didn't have any snow sleds... so began an adventure! We headed to a local hardware store hoping to buy trashcan lids. They only sell lids with the trashcans, hope no one ever looses a lid or it's at least $20! So we went to a Walmart. You could literally see the snow capped mountains from the parking lot.

No sleds... but we did get something... more on that later... The drive was a long one so Tinkmomma snapped a few "road trip" shots...

And then we made it.

Re: Snow Day at Mormon Rocks CA.

So the usual shots of the kids in the snow

At some point a snowball fight erupted... their Uncle and I taught them to make snowballs and while they couldn't really throw them... they tried... Tink got a video for the memories. Now this shot is slightly out of order but it is the first time the baby had ever seen snow

Re: Snow Day at Mormon Rocks CA.

I'm thinking since you didn't have snow where you lived you had to travel to it! What joy that must be, I wish I could do that here...I mean, really. This front-door delivery of the stuff is driving me ballistic.

Is this something you've done before? The kids seem to know what they are doing...

And thanks for posting...you love your family deeply and it shows.

Peace,
Roo

Re: Snow Day at Mormon Rocks CA.

Remember how I said we got "something" at Walmart. It's in the background

Walmart didn't have sleds, or trashcan lids, so as a last ditch effort my friend asked about old Summer Stock. The employee led us to the clearance section where we found several inflatable pool beds... $5 each... so for $10 we had 2 makeshift sleds. We figured it would probably work... more on that in a moment... because he found them he got the trial run... but had to share

So they work... and that was with an adult and a kid... now for the kids...

And just to answer the question of how far a little kid can "glide" on an air mattress down a very slight decline with a gentle "push"... let's say in excess of 100ft and picking up speed as they went!

Re: Snow Day at Mormon Rocks CA.

At one point I ended up holding the babies because the moms wanted a turn...

Sadly this is the last shot of this mattress inflated

Shortly after this was taken this mattress was snagged on some brush and quickly deflated due to multiple tears. $5 for a couple hours of snow play... well worth the investment I would say... On a side note we had several parents inquire which "snow shop" sold these sleds. If we had bought more I have no doubt we could have made a profit out there! Our inflatable was beating the $20-$30 snow sleds... and while we debated about taking a steeper hill we didn't want to chance anything (these things were FLYING on a bunny hill with the kids).

We ended up leaving soon after one of the mattresses popped. We likely would have left anyways but California Highway Patrol encouraged our departure. Mormon Rocks doesn't have a parking lot so everyone had pulled over on the side of the highway. CHP rolled down the highway and made an announcement over the PA. "5 minutes and we start towing cars". Because of the kids there was no way I was going to make it out on time so I sent my wife, baby, and the oldest ahead to the car. I actually felt bad for the CHP Officer, a lot of families were cussing him out. He was just doing his job, and honestly he could have made a fortune writing tickets and not said a word. After several had left I thanked him for the warning. I mentioned that it was nice to have a warning instead of simply writing tickets. I also explained that due to "4 year old feet" I wasn't going to make the 5 minute deadline but that I had sent the wife ahead. He explained that it was the holidays, and while he could have written tickets he wouldn't feel right... since it was all families and as he put it "with this economy everyone needs a smile not a bill!". Then he leaned forward and quietly explained that there would be no towing, he just needed to clear the road. He leaned back and continued to explain slightly louder that you couldn't park on the side of the road because it could be a blocking hazard for emergency vehicles. He asked my daughter if she had fun... 4 years old... and her reply "I played in the snow and had fun and then daddy said we had to leave because someone would take our van" I felt so bad knowing that the CHP Officer probably felt 3in tall... wished him a Happy Holidays and again thanked him for the warning instead of the ticket and off we went. It's nice to know that in tough times some people are willing to find creative ways to keep the peace and still maintain holiday spirits.

So to those people in China who made the air beds, the guy at Walmart who found them for us, and the CHP Officer who didn't ticket everyone for enjoying the snow... THANK YOU... we had a blast on our snow day!

Just so you know the stores in the "foothills"... which you can see the snow capped mountains from the parking lot since they are less then 10 minutes away... the stores we went to in the "foothills" do not sell snow gear! Why on earth they don't is beyond me... but we ended up going down the mountain on inflatable pool lounge beds because of it!

Aside from that we worked up a sweat pushing the kids so the jackets came off.
