As If (Large Scale Disney-like theme park)

I found this on the justinspace blog and I could not pass this up! This is artwork for the purposed Wizard of OZ theme park in Kansas and it's being sold on ebay. I just had to share!

Quote:
This is original art created by scores of artists for the proposed Wonderful World of OZ theme park, Kansas. Artists: Tim Hildebrandt, William Stout, Eric Heschong, Greg Pro, Greg Damron, Jim Adams, Charles Cancillier, Mick Reinman, and many others! This was truly a vision of epic proportions! One that would have rivaled even that of Disney!
taken from the jusinspace blog:

A theme park design company I worked for years ago is now selling off all their art. I have a gajillion pictures to post from this. Lets start with costume designs from Pete Menefee for what I’m guessing was an all male revue/pirate stunt show. I **** you not, the last one is actually labeled “Tribal Bro.”

this is all very kitschy and awesome in its generic fantasy spectacle 70’s pinball game art kind of way - also wildly inspiring.
more to come...

There's no place like Oz! Water flume rides are among my favorites. The immersive settings would have rivaled Disney big time. The boat and raft each look like a blast. If Dorathy' house should slide down into the rapids, I'd want to ride the house.

Too bad they didn't go through with it. I was following the progess of this park for a while. As I recall, it seems like some loud mouthed local groups lobbied against it ..which seems to be the case a large part of the time for the theme park industry. High brow zealots just don't care about the positive magnetic draw, the recreational value, and the fiscal profits that theme parks represent. Walt was confronted with the same kind of inept attitude.

Wonder what other rides they had in mind?

Re: As If (Large Scale Disney-like theme park)

I was noticing these all were on the landmark entertainment website...not all of those were meant for the Land of Oz themepark. They also had plans for a sanrio park and a He-man themed show. Might I add the pirates that would have rivaled chippendales was not for the land of oz park but more for a vegas show elsewhere.

I happen to have done a bit of research on the Oz theme park that never was made

there was going to be a glida's bubble ride

hmmmmmm Glenda's bubble ride sounds interesting. Wonder what kind of ride system technology we're talking about here.

yeah I think the pictures labled with the offical OZ logo pertain to the OZ theme park. I have no clue what the others are about. I also don't know anything about the design company other than it went belly up. I'll post a few more pictures when I get the chance. GAH I miss the holiday weekend!

Re: As If (Large Scale Disney-like theme park)

From what I read and saw in concept art it really was going to be something. Combining the 1939 film with the novels. You started out in kansas (naturally as the park was to be built in kansas) where there was an L.Frank Baum museum, Uncle Henry's Petting Zoo,a Toto show, some shops and guest relations a'la mainstreet U.S.A. as well as a tornado themed ride. Inside Munchkinland you could find a water play area called the Munchkinland water works, Dorothy's landed house, Munchkin guest cottages, and shows.

in Quadling Country you could find the glinda bubble ride a roller coaster called the spell binder and H.M. Wogglebug's Ozdental college.
As well as a scarecrow themed show and a corn maze.

The emerald city would have an Ozma themed palace, a tik tok roller coaster as well as an undersea kingdom attraction, an emerald city hotel, wedding pavillion and numerous character interactions..

what got me excited was the winkie country, with a haunted forest, the nome king's labyrinth, haunted white water rapids attraction, witch encounter show, and a haunted hotel..yes you could stay in three seperate hotels on the property.

Concept art can be deceiving, which is why I love conceptual art. We all know how this park ended up.

It's like willingly moving by the airport and then complaining about the noise.

At least this park is getting a second chance. OZ never even got a first chance.

Kansas was gonna have an Oz theme park!? Awesome. I would've liked to see that go through, lol. Even though we already have plenty of Oz-themed spectacles here.
