![]() | Aloha! Trekkie Dad's week in Hawaii Spring break came, and instead of going to Disneyland, we decided instead to fly to Hawaii, where our son is stationed at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Airfares were low, and I was able to find a budget room about a block away from his Waikiki apartment. He had been sent there last September, but his ship was underway shortly after he arrived and didn't return until early February. So he really hadn't done much touring himself. We arrived Wednesday, March 15, and our son greeted us with leis at the airport. (Nice touch.) He dropped us off at our hotel and went back to work. DW and I found a place for lunch and walked over to the beach at Waikiki. ![]() ![]() We explored some of the streets and pretty much spent the rest of the day getting oriented. You can pretty much walk everywhere you need to go in Waikiki, and parking is limited and expensive. Our room was a bargain, but located on a noisy street. That took some getting used to. The view from our lanai wasn't bad (if you can just get rid of that old man in the picture). ![]() We got to check out our son's new place. (Sorry, no pix.) It's on the 19th floor with a view of the mountains. The next day we started touring in earnest. We booked a grand circle tour around the island, on a bus driven by "Cousin James." Between cracking jokes, he actually gave us some useful information. Our other source of useful information was a book called Oahu Revealed. It pretty much became my bible for the duration of our stay. Our first stop was the overlook on the Pali Highway. At this place, the last battle unifying Hawaii was fought, with the losing warriors jumping (or being forced) off the cliffs. ![]() ![]() ![]() We then crossed back over the mountains on interstate H3 and up through the center of Oahu towards the north shore. But before we got there, we had a 40 minute stop at the Dole Plantation about 10 miles from the coast. That only gave us enough time to tour the garden. DW went wild with her camera. I'll show you a few shots: ![]() ![]() Red ginger ![]() Bananas ![]() Hibiscus ![]() More Hibiscus ![]() Look at the size of this one! But soon we touring the North Coast. I'll start my next post with Sunset Beach.

Our next stop on the bus was Sunset Beach. Too bad we weren't there at Sunset. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not really a swimmers beach this time of year. Then it was around the northern tip of the island, past Turtle Bay and Kuhuku to our lunch stop at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We were basically on our own for lunch, with a couple choices at the center and a McDonald's nearby. I have no pictures from our lunch stop, but never fear, we returned a couple days later, and you'll see plenty of shots then. As we made our way along the windward coast, we stopped at a macadamia nut farm near Kualoa Ranch. We got to sample just about every flavor available. There were some interesting sights around there. ![]() Might be a background from Jurassic Park or Lost. ![]() In front of the farm ![]() The flower of a coffee plant We rounded the eastern edge ![]() ![]() past the lighthouse where we stopped to view a blowhole. But there were whales off the shore, so the blowhole got little attention, and the whales didn't pose for pictures. On clearer days, the islands of Molokai and Maui can be seen from near here. ![]() ![]() We did see some other wildlife, though. Our final stop of the day was Hanauma Bay, near Koko Head. It's a very popular snorkeling spot, but it was closed due to the monthly appearance of stinging box jellyfish. Still got some nice shots of the deserted beach. ![]() ![]() And that's pretty much it for our first full day in Hawaii. But that wasn't our last on the north shore. More about that later. Tomorrow we are going to a Luau!

![]() | Re: Aloha! Trekkie Dad's week in Hawaii The next day (Friday), our son had to work, but he did ask for us to book the luau for that evening, and that he was bringing a guest--another officer from the ship who had also just moved to Hawaii. During the day we got trolley passes and used them to tour Honolulu. Our first stop was the Bishop Museum. We only spent a couple of hours there and took no pictures, but we did focus on learning about Hawaii's royal past. Our second stop was a brief one at Hilo Hattie's. We avoided the temptation to shop. Then we stopped for lunch at the Ala Moana Mall. The food court there is huge! Of course we had to walk off lunch afterwards. We made phone contact with our son, and he was getting off work early enough to drive back to Waikiki and take us to the luau in his car. We took the trolley back to Waikiki and picked up our vouchers for Germaine's Luau. Most folks take the free bus to the luau, and by the time we got there, things were about to get underway. When we arrived, we had our picture taken before we proceeded to the dining/show area. ![]() It's a picture of a picture, taken with my phone. Our son's guest declined to be in it. They had entertainment before, during, and after the meal. ![]() The beginning was mostly ceremony ![]() ![]() This is the pig that had been cooking all day in the pit. ![]() Even that has some ceremony. Shortly after, we lined up for the outdoor buffet that included the pig, teriyaki beef, rice, chicken long rice, lomi lomi salmon, fish, salad, purple sweet potatoes, and a small sample of poi. As the sun went down, the entertainment ramped up. ![]() And the party went on. Sorry we don't have more pictures, but it was pretty dark. Next up: Back to the north shore and the Polynesian Cultural Center.
