Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

I went to the construction site for the Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio in SF. They have done a lot of work since last year.

I left my camera on 1500 ISO by mistake so the photos are a bit grainy.

The Museum on the left and the parking lot on the right.

The front of the building

You can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the side of the building.

The back

The view from the back is really cool

Up the road from the Museum. These photos were taken out of a moving car so they're a bit blurry.

You can just barely see it but there is a Coast Guard helicopter in the picture. It flew up to the coast and dropped a rescue swimmer in the ocean.

Re: Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

I am looking forward to seeing the museum when it opens. Being an artist I expect to spend a good deal of time there.

Re: Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

The Walt Disney Family Foundation announced last week in the San Francisco Chronicle that the museum will open in October. I live in San Francisco and went to check out the progress on the structure just last week. Things are coming together, looks like just the inside final finishing and landscaping are waiting to be done. Then of course, the exhibit installation.

The museum is going to host an event, I believe it's first event, along with George Lucas' Digital Arts Center next door, on April 25th. Below is info on the event from the Golden Gate Disneyana Club as well as a link to the event site.
------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco International Film Festival is having its annual 52nd
event from April 23 thru May 7.

Of special Disney interest, the film "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers'
Story" will be premiered on Saturday, April 25. Here is what the
mini-program says:

2:00pm Premier Theater
Letterman Digital Arts Center
One Letterman Drive, The Presidio
Members $12.00, general $15.00, film & party $30.00

The remarkable Sherman Brothers, the two brilliant but often feuding
siblings behind many Disney scores from the '60s and '70s, including
Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and It's a Small World, are profiled by
their sons, cousins Gregory and Jeff Sherman, in this intriguing look at
creativity, genius and family ties. The world premiere screening will
be followed by a special reception for film and party ticket holders
with the filmmakers in the reception space of the Disney Family Museum
(which will open this coming fall).

SAT April 25 2:00 Letterman Boys25 Film & Party
SAT April 25 2:00 Letterman Boys25L Film Only

Re: Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

More info to update on the Sherman Brothers Documentary at the San Francisco International Film Festival from the local Golden Gate Disneyana Club; See the note below.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought you might want to pass the following event along to your members if anyone is interested. A new documentary called "the boys: the shreman brothers' story" is having it's World Premiere at the SF Film Festival next Saturday, April 25. Richard Sherman will be on hand for the event. It's a great documentary that will be having a limited run in SF starting on May 1.

The cool part of the event is the after party which will be held at the Walt Disney Family Museum reception hall. We are being told that Richard Sherman will perform a few songs that day. Also, the film will be screening at the Premier Theater on the ILM campus, which is rarely open to the public.

I wanted to let you guys know about the event before it sells out. Here is the link to the SF Film Festival website http://fest09.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=11

Re: Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

Thanks for the info, Gullywhumper. I told my wife, and I think she had the tickets before I got off the phone with her. She has been a fan of the Sherman Brothers for years, and the chance to see even a part of the Disney Family Museum before it opens was enough for her to go. The possibility of seeing Richard at the reception afterward would be a huge plus. Who knows, with Pixar and the Disney family not that far away, there seems to be a potential to see some fairly major people from the company's past and present. Not that we are going for that, but it would certainly make the event memorable.

Can an old toad inquire as to exactly the latitude and longitude of that final picture with the sea grass?

Can't wait! From all I've heard/read about, it's going to be great.

(why did they drop the "rescue swimmer" INTO the water? that'll teach him!)

Re: Walt Disney Family Museum Construction Photos

Things I expect to find in the Bay Area located, Walt Disney Museum:

- A detailed explanation of why, if Goofy and Pluto are both dogs, one is walking upright and the other is on all fours?

- One of the original trains that circled Walt’s backyard.

- The fishing pole Walt used to whack Roy in the behind when Roy went and used real gold plate on the castle spires without permission.

- The first audio-animatronics used on the Jungle Cruise. I am referring of course to those monkeys with the spinning heads.

- The anonymous memo sent to Walt from Imagineering stating that if he didn’t shave that mini-moustache, he would start to resemble an infamous historical dictator. I’ve heard this was auctioned off years ago when they were thinking about building a park in Germany but has since found its way back to the states.

- 1 Yesterland Rocket Rod, for old time’s sake.

- Walt’s “tap” to the Bohemian Club.

- Before Walt decided to dedicate a horse on the carousel to Lilly, he originally wanted to announce one of the Flying Saucers in her name. I would like to see this saucer suspended from the ceiling in all its celestial glory.

- The cowboy from the Wild West shoot-out game in Critter Country. I guess the alien from the Starcade would be good too.

- The caged witch that used to be on Main Street, then the Villain Shop, then La Baton Rogue…

- A single pair of pink Captain EO 3-D glasses.

- The sketches from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 2: The Friendly Forest

- Originally, Country Bears had a gruff-looking bear modeled after Walt himself. I think Eisner was given the bear after a particularly good year, so if he would be so kind as to donate that to the museum.

- The late and great John Hench is said to have been commissioned by Walt to draw out the plans for Disney Space, a theme park to be built when technology allows, in deep space.

Finally, I think we would all like to see classic photos of the animation days at the Hyperion, the “old men”, and maybe some scratchy black and whites of where Walt grew up. There could even be some artifacts from the construction of the parks. Come to think of it, this is probably all there will be.
