Question Knott's Calico Mine Ride Music

I'm just curious if any music was EVER released from Knott's. I love the music that is played in the rainbow caverns part of the Calico Mine Ride. I've been told it's a famous pipe organ piece.

However, I've never had any luck finding it or finding who produced it.

Does anyone know what this piece is called or if it was unique to Knott's only? Or If there is anyway to get a hold of it?

Thanks!

I haven't been to Knott's in ages ... but the only really famous pipe organ music is Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by J. S. Bach. If someone is playing a pipe organ in a movie, chances are this is it.

It is definitely not that.

It sounds like a cross between old-time silent film organ music and a religious hymn. I have no idea what it is though. It would be interesting if someone knew.

I was thinking that it would be nice to know the music, too! Hope someone around here knows!

Re: Knott's Calico Mine Ride Music

Seems like when I was a kid, back in the 1960's, the old Speelunker's Cave dark ride where you floated in boats through a cave past animated scenes at Six Flags Over Texas had the same, or similar, organ music. That was one freaky, tripped out ride!

Re: Knott's Calico Mine Ride Music

As far as I know, it was written and recorded specifically for the ride, and is not based on any famous piece of music. The below link has a short film of the ride shortly after it opened, and you can hear the music used in that room.

O.C. History Roundup: Calico Mine Ride, Bud Hurlbut, RSM, grants, etc.

Click the middle picture for the vid in question.

Re: Knott's Calico Mine Ride Music

i used to work on the mine ride and as far as i remember it is an original piece of music and was never released to the public. It could be archived in their library.

funny story when i first worked there there was an annual passholder we dubbed the mad bomber because he would show up at closing all the time and sit in the back car and he'd make us drive one more trip cause usually no one shoed up at closing time

we found out the reason he sat in the back was because he loved the music in the caverns so if u sit in the back...you can hear all of the music

sometimes we would drive real fast so he couldnt hear it all lol

finally.. a co worker hid inside the mountain and kept socking him in the dark (not too hard) but enough where he sat in the middle of the car on the floor lol
i think he stopped coming shortly after that

yes it was mean...ghessh lol

Re: Knott's Calico Mine Ride Music

I was aquainted with the gentleman who did the sound for Hurlbut Amusement. He did tell me that the music in the cavern scene was written specifically for it. I seem to recall that it was performed by noted theater organist Gaylord Carter (it's possible that he composed the piece as well).

That is interesting. And not knowing any other facts, I'd have to agree with you as it does sound slightly more like a piece of theatre organ music than it does spiritual music.
