Garden Grove looks for theme park developer

Developer who entered into 90-day agreement has yet to show evidence of partnership for project.

Quote:
GARDEN GROVE – City officials said today that they will continue their search for developers that could help them realize their dream of transforming 160 acres on Harbor Boulevard into a theme park.

Two months ago, City Council members voted unanimously to give developer Chris Yang 90 days to forge a partnership with a major studio such as Universal or MGM, whose films and characters could be used for rides and attractions in the park.

But as of today, Yang had shown no evidence of such a partnership or put forth the deposit that he said would prove his financial backing from large corporations based in Korea and Hong Kong.

Yang could not be reached for comment today.

The city was not going to use his money for studies or consultant fees, said Economic Development Director Chet Yoshizaki.

"It was more for the developer's own protection," he said. "But now that we've passed the 60-day mark, as per the contract, we're free to pursue other developers."

And he and his staff intend to do that, Yoshizaki said.

The City Council could revisit the contract in March and decide to extend it by another 60 days if Yang shows evidence of some progress, said City Manager Matthew Fertal.

"But if we don't see any progress, there is little point in extending the contract," he said.

Mayor William Dalton said he is confident Harbor Boulevard will be developed to the city's advantage, however long it may take.
"There are many challenges involved, from finding investors and developers to acquiring the land in the area," he said. "We're not sure when it will happen. But the fact that it will happen is a certainty."
