Its Official... Knott's getting Pony Express in 2008

Cedar Fair has announce that indeed Knott's will be getting Pony Express for next year.

Here's the press-release regarding The Pony Express.

Quote:
“First Class” thrills will truly be delivered to guests at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California with the debut of Pony Express. Riders will saddle up on one of two, 12-passenger trains, riding “horseback” as they are launched forward at the beginning of the ride. Featuring low-to-the-ground maneuvers, hairpin turns and steep banks, Pony Express will be ready to thrill riders in the Ghost Town section of the park.
I've read that Knott's has already removed Wilderness Scrambler and starting to clear up the Big Foot's Broiler.

What's the Big Foot Broiler? I can't remember what that was. Anyone know the grand opening date?

Well, here is the next step in creating Magic Mountain part 2.

I'm sure it will be great, and I've always wanted to ride one of the motorcylcle type rides ... but ...

Well, it's more theme than the last couple of coasters that they have put in.

UGH! I'm not a prude, but come on, enough is enough. Why can't Knott's resort back to some of it's original theme. How come every ride now has to be a thrill ride??? Why not create a really cool dark ride, or something that the whole family can enjoy???

Don't get me wrong, I have an annual pass to Knott's and I do enjoy going. But they're really taking more and more charm out of that theme park and making it more Knott's Ghetto Farm! (sigh)

It's sad, and I'm sure Mr & Mrs Knott's are rolling in their graves with disgust!

^ I have no doubt about that.

Enough with What Would Walt Do. How about What Would Walter (Knott) Do?

I mean, granted Kingdom of the DinoSnores was past it's prime, but it's been closed for how long now? And they couldn't have brought in a sally dark ride or SOMETHING in that time?

Since that time they have added, what, 3 new coasters now and 2 off-the-shelf kiddie rides in Camp Snoopy.

Give us something besides a coaster.

We didn't get Knott's passes last year, and I don't really miss the place. But we will be getting them next year as we are planning trips to PA (Dorney) and perhaps VA (Kings Dominion) and NorCal (Great Adventure/Bonfante). But if we weren't doing those parks, we wouldn't be getting them I'm sure.

Stopped by last night, the area from Bigfoot Rapids to the Train Tracks next to the Bumper Cars is closed, and the Wilderness Scrambler has been removed.

Bigfoot Broiler is still standing and hasn't been touched.

Photos can be found at the link below.

Re: Its Official... Knott's getting Pony Express in 2008

I don't really see what everyone is getting so up in arms about. I think Knott's is being very smart right now. If you saw the press release, the ride is only going to hit 38 mph... hardly up to Magic Mountain thrill ride status. I mean, Space Mountain hits 35 mph, and no one is claiming that that is "Magic Mountaining" Disneyland.

Knott's seems to be aiming at that pre-teen/family market... families with kids "too old" for Disney (many pre-teens feel it's for babies), yet not so thrilling that parents sit out the rides like they do at Magic Mountain. Sierra Sidewinder hit a great note that Disney has not found, and Knott's is going on with it. Can I also state that these two latest coasters are unique in the country? I say, good for them! I can't wait for this ride!

Re: Its Official... Knott's getting Pony Express in 2008

Im excited to. I am ha huge Disney fan and I live Magic Mountain to. (The rides not the park). I think Kotts is fitting right in the middle. As long as they keep the place clean and safe I think they will do well. They can not compete with Disney so why try. They need to go after the little older market. This new ride will be great for the whole family. A family with older kids that dont care for dark rides. Lets face it not many can do dark rides that the whole family will enjoy.

Right now that's true, and Cedar Fair is historically not in the theme park business, but the thrill park business, hence the acquisition of the Paramount Parks. They also went for quality, not quantity, which is why they didn't try harder for Six Flags parks. When I had the opportunity to speak with Dick Kinzel last year, I asked about Knott's and Geauga Lake specifically, and he said while there were no concrete plans yet, both parks were planned to return to a more family atmosphere, with a range of experiences for the whole family. Geauga Lake did that, converting entirely to a water park. I can see Knotts doing a revamp of certain areas to bring in new family type rides and attractions, but the vast majority or pass holders have not been in favor of it in the past.

Okay ... let's look at the choices:

La Revolution - Crappy capacity, worse ride operators and if your even a little on the Bigger side, don't bother. Opened, what, 4 years ago?

Christmas Parade - Seasonal

Johnny Rockets - Grossly overpriced, but a nice change.

TGI-FRIDAYS - not in the park

Panda Express - Hadn't heard about this, but what is this replacing?

Pacific Spin - Seperate Admission

You also forgot about RipTide.

I'm saying, how about a "Family" ride to replace KoD in a "Family" park.
