I had read online that this was the last year the Experience was contracted, and then they had to decide if they would renew it. Then I read this:

If anyone loves this place as much as I do, the first post of the thread has contact info and e-mail addresses. I've already sent out 3 e-mails today (2 to the managers at STE, 1 to Cedar Fair).

This sucks hardcore. This is by far the best thing in Vegas, and I will probably rarely ever go to Vegas if this is removed. I will contact those people soon. Vegas should be filled with more Disney E-Ticket level attractions like Star Trek: The Experience. The Circus Circus Amusement Park is just filler and the Roller Coaster at the New York, New York (or when I rode it, it was called Manhatten Express) is just painful.

Definately the best attraction on Vegas, but attractions have been disappearing from Vegas for quite a while now. This was probably inevitable. The last time I went, it wasn't that popular, so I'm not too shocked. Definately a major reason for me not to go back again now.

You do understand that there are other things to do in Las Vegas besides ride rides, don't you?

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but the "family-friendly-amusement-park-style" Vegas died about 10 years ago--mostly because it never worked. Las Vegas tried to reinvent itself in the 80s and 90s by adding kid-friendly attractions (Adventuredome, MGM Grand Adventures, Star Trek, etc.), but that was seldom the reason people came here. Las Vegas is, was and always will be a playground for adults. Over the decades, our visitors have made it clear they don't want it any other way. There's a reason "What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas" became one of the most popular ad slogans ever.

Forty million people will visit this year to see the sights, explore the resorts, shop and dine (yes, they'll gamble too, but that's not the primary reason most people come here anymore). Some may pay a visit to Star Trek, but a lot won't. I work close to the Hilton and go there often. Except when the Trekkie Convention was in town, I can't recall the last time I saw a lot of people at Star Trek: The Experience.

Is it a cool attraction? Yes. Will I miss it when it's gone? Probably. But I understand why it might be closing (no official announcement yet). People just aren't going there. The area it's in is one of the deadest spots in the hotel. For as much space as it takes up, Resorts can make a lot more money converting it into something else, even if it's just more casino space.

Most advanced, yes. But only because no one else has made any attempt to match or surpass it . . . because no one's interested in doing themed ride simulators in Las Vegas anymore.

I have no interest in gambling so this will probably be my only Vegas experience for my life... gotta do it once. What's a good time to go when the crowds are light and the Hilton rooms will be reasonably priced?

Weekdays definitely. Check the rates on Expedia - there's no set "ideal" time because of the convention business. What's slow time one year might be packed another. But generally (as you might expect), holiday times are the worst. I would guess that early May is a good time (post-Spring break and pre-Summer).

And you don't need to stay at the Hilton, everything's pretty accessible. Although without a major convention, the Hilton's rates would be pretty good.

The best time to visit Las Vegas from a price/crowds standpoint is usually the two-weeks prior to Christmas--the trade off is most of the showrooms go dark during that time. And, of course, if the OP's story turns out to be true, Star Trek will already by closed.

If you don't mind the heat, I'd suggest going mid-week during July or August. There's less convention business, at least the really big shows, but there are a lot of tourists. Room rates tend to be more reasonable though.

Also, if budget is a real concern, I'd stay at the Sahara instead of the Hilton. It's the next stop on the Monorail track and their rooms rates are considerably lower than the Hilton.

Frankly, I'm not one for Las Vegas. I don't gamble or drink; the casinos are huge--so the family friendly bit was all that got me to even go! That and I have friends there. My Ma is celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary and wants to go and this was my selling point to convince myself that, well, at least there's something 'Disney-ish' to attend.

Guess I'll save money on airfare.

And use it to go to Disney again.

Are there any perks with the Experience by staying in the Hilton? Unlimited access to the simulators?
What else should I check out while I'm there that's not gambling or drinking related? Cirque de Soleil?

Sad. There goes the only attraction that ever interested me in Las Vegas. Not really surprised though. Vegas is moving as fast as it can towards a silly mantra of being some hedonists' amoral playground, a real life version of Pinocchio's Pleasure Island (that has some intrigue for me, but if I were to really pursue that, I think I'd just go to Thailand anyway). If they didn't already have Harry Potter and the Simpsons rolling forward, I'd say maybe Universal could pick up attraction rights. It is kind of odd they're killing it before the new movie comes out though.
