Elly and Dustin go to the Reno Rodeo!

Even tho i've been sick for the last 5 days with a nasty summer cold, Dustin and I had promised my mum we'd take her to to the Reno Rodeo on this last Monday night, and that we did.

Before we got into the arena for the rodeo, we stopped along the typical carnival streets.

My mum and Dustin:

Hey look, a cheap house of mirrors!

View down what i call "Carny Streets"

the one thing i think Dustin loves the most about the Rodeo is all the crappy fried foods:

And trust me, just about everything is fried:

However one of the best things there is from one of our local BBQ places. They're called "Kick *** Fries" and they're french fries, topped with pulled pork, bbq sauce and cheese...they're artery-cloggingly awesome!

After securing our early heart attacks we made our way into the Rodeo arena. The Reno Rodeo is one of the richest rodeos in the country, but definantly not one of the highest budgeted ones:

The flag girl drill team came out on horseback for a pre-rodeo show:

However about halfway into their routine, two of the horses collided pretty much head on, leaving 2 girls and one of the horses on the ground:

They loaded one of the girls onto a backboard and the downed horse onto the equine/bovine ambulance:

They reported later on in the Rodeo that both the girl and the horse were ok! Thank goodness, it was a bit scary there for a bit.

The next bit of drama entertainment came via a skydiver towing the American flag...in 30knot winds:

He ended up landing north of the arena in the parking lot instead of in the middle of the arena as scheduled. We were also updated that he was a-ok as well.

Then it was finally on to the Rodeo action! First up, Bareback Bronc riding:

Followed by Steer Wrestling:

Followed by Calf Roping and Team Roping:

Followed by Saddle Broncs:

Then there was what i call "half time". A show with some horses drawing a stagecoach and a world champion rope twirler (can't think of his actual title). It was good fun, same as last year though.

Then came the Mutten Bustin'! perhaps my fave thing. 5-7 year olds on the backs of sheep holding on for dear life. Its one of the cutest things ever as the kids only last a second or two and end up in the dirt:

Then there were the lady barrel racers, no one knocked any barrels over the night we went, unlike last year where i think every single attempt had at least 1 barrel go over:

Then there were some quick and cheapie fireworks:

which were to announce the bull riding portion of the show:

I didn't get many pix of the bull riders because this is the one event i really really like to watch. But after they were done, so were we. It was time for us to head home so i could take some more cold medicine. On the way out i got a pic of what I think is a historical sign, but I could be completely wrong. It looks way cooler at night than during the day:

And that ladies and gentlemen, is my view of the 2008 Reno Rodeo. I will leave you with what was perhaps the most disturbing image i took the entire day (Seriously, i couldn't believe they left Homer up this way):

I still have never been to a rodeo but now that I know that they hang Homer I might have to go...

nice pics, but I hate rodeo's and how those poor animals have to be roped and such, breaks my heart to see how there treated. poor roped calves, not my cup of tea. round here I grew up with rodeo's just 1 mile from the house. been to many. but not any more.

Nice pictures... I think we should form a posse and go save Homer and his twin brother Earl that looks to be getting the same treatment..

Red Face Re: Elly and Dustin go to the Reno Rodeo!

Thanks for the photos Elly. We haven't been to the Reno Rodeo in years, but I think it is about time to take my girls, I think they would have a good time, I'll have to remember it next year. The daughter of a friend of mine was trying out for Miss Reno Rodeo, I guess I should give her a call since I've been so self absorbed I forgot all about it.

Thanks for the report. I went to a rodeo in Wyoming and actually had a good time even though rodeos aren't my thing.

So true!

Great report Elly! Those fries made me question the combination, but now I really want to try them.

Poor, poor, Homer.

Re: Elly and Dustin go to the Reno Rodeo!

Great trip report, kids! I haven't been to a rodeo in . . . well so long that I cannot remember when!

Love the Kick *** Fries. May just have to try to recreate that at home one day soon. And, I noticed the Mardi Gras hall of mirrors is similar to one at our San Diego County Fair which I included in our TR on the fair.

See?

But note, the artwork on the right side is not quite the same. I think our ladies are having a better time than yours, and their, um, beads look larger to me. Wonder if all of them are painted by hand, one at a time?

Thanks, again!
Lu

Nice TR. The sign is from the old Harold's Club (casino) that was torn down years ago. The mural was saved before the building was demolished.
