Is there any way to tell if a 'Pre Production/Prototype Pin' is authentic or not? Also what does 'First Release' on the back signify? I have a pin with a date as part of the art and it seems unlikely they would re-release that item.

First release means that it is the 'first release" of that pin. It is basically that first shipment of a pin. They may release a pin with a date over the course of the year, depends upon the pin.
