Pixar Animation Studios next feature film will be “Luca,” an all-new coming-of-age story. The film is currently scheduled to open theatrically on June 18, 2021.

The studio explained “Luca” on social media:

“We’re excited to introduce you to “Luca.” Directed by Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren, our all-new film will take audiences to a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera to meet a boy named Luca as he experiences an unforgettable summer with new friends.”

According to a Disney press release, the fun that Luca has with his new friends is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.

Soul and Other Animated Features On the Horizon

Before “Luca” sees its big-screen debut, there’s another Pixar film slated for release. The premiere of Pixar’s “Soul” is currently scheduled for Nov. 20. Prior to it being rescheduled from June 19, the date is within a week of where Disney’s animated feature “Raya and the Last Dragon” was scheduled to open. Due to the shuffling, “Raya and the Last Dragon” has been moved to March 12, 2021.

Coming Attractions from Disney Animation: Raya and the Last Dragon

Earlier this year, Pixar’s fantasy adventure “Onward” was released just before theaters were forced to close. It ended its box office run just north of $100 million globally before Disney released it early on digital rental platforms and Disney+.

“Onward” Director Dan Scanlon stated, “While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.”
