Seconding Old Town. Haven't been for a few years, but when I was down SD way more regularly it was a frequent stop. During the summer they frequently host(ed?) pretty decent living history style events.

I'm always a fan of Mission Beach. But I love coasters, so yeah
There's nothing like being in heavy rehearsal for a new season to remind you that this isn't just a hobby.

Anyone who doesn't live here, please enjoy the local beer. Thank you.

Visit the Cove in La Jolla.

It has a small beach, rocks to climb on with some tide pools, also a short cave to go through. This area of rocky sure has snorkeling and kayaking rentals available, but consider water roughness, and your experience it is open to the ocean. By kayak you can access the mouths of many shallow caves adjacent to the beach.
