SeaWorld San Diego Preparing to Build Manta Coaster in 2012
Looks like SeaWorld San Diego is about to build a new Manta coaster. While that sounds great, the last time the cloned an Orlando ride (Journey to Atlantis) it didn't turn out so great. let's hope that the city lets them do it right this time!
Here's the story from our pal Brady at the LA Times:

SeaWorld San Diego plans to unveil a $10 million manta-themed ride and animal exhibit for 2012, according to construction documents.

best news i have heard all day, this something Sea world needs.. is 10 million really enough?
Re: SeaWorld San Diego Preparing to Build Manta Coaster in 2012
In thinking about this some more , I really hope Sea world doesn't cheapen out on the westcoast version of Manta... We saw what happened with Journey to Atlantis... Its nothing compared to the Florida version

About time...2012 is the year to be at theme Parks
Re: SeaWorld San Diego Preparing to Build Manta Coaster in 2012
It'll be interesting to see where they build the coaster, considering how dense the park is already on that little island. They are doing a lot of construction towards the entrance of the park though.... hmmm

I was excited... until I saw $10 million. That number feels so small.

^not everything has to come with a 100 million dollar price to be good especially a coaster.

What sounds discouraging is that it will probably have no indoor/outdoor theming, making it suck. I guess San Diego gave them a lot of crap about it, forcing them to compromise. :(

It's not going to be a clone. It's a completely different ride system, more similar to Revenge of the Mummy. It was have multiple launches which allows it not to effect the skyline as much as the ill-fated Journey To Atlantis. $10m, is more than enough to for this type of ride system and queue.

Bummer. I was looking forward to another flying coaster like Tatsu on the west coast.

I was gonna say, there's no way that the San Diego City Council would let them build Manta as it stands in Orlando. It will have to be very low to the ground as to not be intruding in the SD skyline.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, hopefully not as bad as Atlantis.

The city council in san diego is kind of a joke you think they would be pro business and allow the theme park to develop properly... create jobs and bring in additional tax revenue...
Blackstone needs to play Hardball like disney and get a more friendly city council in SD Stat

This is going to be an awesome addition to the park. To my knowledge it is not even the city council that usually has the issues but it is the California Coastal Commission.

California Coastal Commission is expected to approve Sea Worlds application next month.
Proposed SeaWorld ride gets OK from coastal board staff - SignOnSanDiego.com
"The Coastal Commission staff, which is recommending approval of the project, notes that it will not exceed a 30-foot height limit that governs most of San Diego’s coastline. The staff points out that the attraction would be “only marginally visible” from outside the park and that there is adequate on-site parking."
