Evacuation Drill For SeaWorld San Diego's Skytower

Firefighters performed an annual drill this past weekend to prepare for a rescue of passengers on SeaWorld's 320 foot tall Skytower.

In the ride's 40 year history, guests have never needed to be evacuated, but the ride has suffered long mechanical failures which have nearly required such actions in the past.

Firefighters used cables to slide from the cabin to safety below.

San Diego Talk Radio KFMB 760 has some video available: 760 KFMB, San Diego Talk Radio-Firefighters Hold Rescue Drill on SeaWorld Skytower

That is one rescue I'd never want to be a part of. I'm too afraid of heights.

Interesting.

I know that Knott's sky tower has a stairway in the middle that you can evacuate through if necessary.

It sounds like SeaWorld's 40 year old tower doesn't have that sort of built in safety feature. I would be SO freaked out to have to slide down a cable to get to safety. But at least they have a plan in place.

Sounds like a pain. As much as I love that Sky Tower, I would hate to get stuck on it!

Absolutely my worst nightmare!

The view of America's Finest City is spectacular from the top, but I can never quite get the thought of the many breakdowns the tower has had over the years out of my mind! I've always thought the evac plan about as practical as Walt Disney World's simple monorail evacuation policy, wherein you climb on the roof through a hatch, shimmy along the top of the train, lower yourself via a rope to the beam and walk to safety.

Don't know what is on the inside of the tower. it would be a great idea if SeaWorld could create a spiraling emergency staircase inside.

I'd kinda like to be rescued by good looking firefighters ..female or male, as I believe in equal opportunity.
