Exclamation Record-breaking air pollution halts all construction in Shanghai

Shanghai authorities ordered schoolchildren indoors and halted all construction Friday as China's financial hub suffered one of its worst bouts of air pollution, bringing visibility down to a few dozen meters, delaying flights and obscuring the city's spectacular skyline.

The financial district was shrouded in a yellow haze, and noticeably fewer people walked the city's streets. Vehicle traffic also was thinner, as authorities pulled 30 percent of government vehicles from the roads. They also banned fireworks and public sporting events.

ORDDU: Not even close. The radiation leaks from Japan's Fukishima Nuclear Plant wins that prize--yet you really don't hear much about that because the Japanese government doesn't want anybody to know just how dangerous it is to live in Japan these days. I would never want to get near Tokyo Disneyland as a result.

Obviously. To spur their economy they put no cost burden on industry to make things better. They just try to grow with no care to what it cost the environment. They are dependent on polluting water and land in other countries too as they feed the demands of their people and industry.

Hopefully plenty of all new growth around the resort starts helping the air quality a bit in the future resort area. It seemed like that large chunk of property had little lush growth and was all housing and other industrial buildings.

Too bad the rest of the city seems to be getting worse
