Re: SDL: News, Rumors, Updates & Discussion

What I find most interesting is that both this new piece and the earlier, blurry one are by the same artist who kept certain elements (the foreground ships, canoes) in both (via Photoshop), but they are renderings of two completely different versions of 'Pirateland'.

I really liked the taller central tower, Skull Rock and background Stunt Lagoon(?) with battling tallships in the earlier piece, though the latter version reflecting what is being built should still be a stunning land.

    Shanghai Disneyland’s Treasure Cove Unveiled

posted on March 18th, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

On this day in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim. Nearly 50 years later, as part of The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger unveiled creative details including the first-ever Pirates-themed land and a new Pirates of the Caribbean attraction designed for the Shanghai Disney Resort. We wanted you to be among the first to have all the details.

“Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most iconic attractions in our parks, and we really couldn’t imagine Shanghai Disneyland without Pirates,” said Bob Iger, Disney chairman and CEO. “We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind experience that would appeal to our Chinese guests while remaining true to its Disney heritage.”
For the first time ever, a Disney Park will be home to a Pirates-themed land—Treasure Cove—and an e-ticket attraction called Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure. The attraction will feature a combination of new technology and innovation to bring guests along a pirate adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Davy Jones, providing our guests who visit the Shanghai Disneyland Park an experience unlike anything else in the world.
“We are extremely proud of all the work underway to bring the Shanghai Disney Resort to life,” said Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “And we’re excited to re-imagine the iconic world and characters of Pirates for the first time as an entire land that celebrates the creativity, imagination and adventure of both the fan favorite attraction and the popular film franchise.”

The announcement coincides with the completion of key structural work on the Pirates attraction, and marks another exciting milestone in the resort development. Progress continues with construction and Shanghai Disney Resort remains on target to open by the end of 2015.
What is that gray building you can see through the construction?

Randy, I think Tim Delaney's proposed Pirates for HKDL was even better. Ending the attraction with a flume drop through Skull Rock? Genius!

In the D23 post, you can see a skull on the left end of the island.

    Also Davey Crockett canoes.

One wonders if the Stunt Lagoon is mostly preserved, just now completely indoors. The older night artwork doesn't really have show buildings, so maybe a bit of artistic license for something that was always truly indoors.

That's certainly possible. These three images represent the earlier version(s) of Treasure Cove:

    I.

    II.

    III.

The common features being (i) a central bridge with water north & south of it (I,II,III), (ii) a very large Skull Rock on the eastern shore (in II,III), (iii) a tallship battle (stunt arena?) taking place at the top (in I, II), and (iv) a very tall central tower on the main fortress (in I,II).

Image II, to me, looks like the stunt show is a large, open arena (like Waterworld) with tallships (covered viewing area facing away from the image backed up against PotC; with a village backdrop to the show).

    ***
All that is in the past now.

Planned or imagined, the art and site plan tell us there will not be a large, dedicated, outdoor Stunt Theater north of PotC. Nor will there be a central bridge traversing the lagoon (path circles the lagoon). I still think there could be a Skull Rock somewhere even though the art doesn't include it.

What could contain a stunt show at this point might be the decently-sized building (Governor's Mansion-like) on the right that has the PotC banner above the door. It wouldn't surprise me if the 'Stunt Show' is now a smaller (and less costly) scale, in-doors and something akin to DHS's Legend of Captain Sparrow but with seats and some live actors interacting with a combination of musion and practical effects.

Another possibility is that the various anchored ships would be used for a "live-entertainment"-style stunt show on the Cove's lagoon.

If you have been to Vegas, consider how they use a large ship and big wall, what how truly compact that area is, in front of the TI (Treasure Island) hotel and casino. It could of easily been placed inside but Vegas's dry weather doesn't call for it and it was built to draw in the visitors on the sidewalk.

It's hard to find a photo that will give good scale. But this is the Flying Dutchman, when it was at Castaway Cay. It's not very big and could easily in that giant building being built.

A Man of War is huge but a quick barely armed pirate ships that attacks merchant ships was not huge.

Also in the new drawing there is still a skull rock. It's on the left end of the long island at the bottom of the picture.

Ohhh, I think you have it backwards. From what I understood the Stunt show is in the taller building on the left of the new artwork and the POTC ride is on the right.

That's what this article implies, which never zooms in and discusses the stunt show: https://d23.com/see-concept-art-shan...treasure-cove/

I definitely don't have it backwards. The bigger, taller building on the left is PotC: Battle for Sunken Treasure, a new version of the classic boat ride, one of the park's signature E-tickets. PotC is typically the largest showbuilding in a castle park and this time is no different. The leaked plan and satellite imagery confirm it:

Ah ok, I was having problems orientating myself with the satellite imagery initially. It is strange that they would have the PotC logo on the right building in the artwork. The D23 article is certainly misleading if that's the case. That said, I wouldn't exactly qualify either building as small.

    Battle of the Sunken Treasure

The ride will take Guests down to the ocean depths, through the bellies of pirate ships, and straight into the heart of a ferocious naval battle, all the while braving the nautical twists, spins and turns of a pirate adventure.
This above is from the Shainghai Disneyland website.

Interesting to see today that Disney announced an additional 800million investment into Shanghai Disneyland, for more opening day attractions etc. Should be interesting to see what new things make it to opening day, that wasn't already speculated!
