Jeopardy. Do You Watch It? Do You Learn From It?

Back in the 60's, when I was home sick from school and sometimes in the summer...I watched a game show with my Mom,
called Jeopardy. I didn't know it then, but the game was the invention of talk show host Merv Griffin.

In those days, Art Fleming was the host, and the announcer was a deep-voiced guy named Don Pardo, who a decade or so later would achieve much greater fame.

From then on, through the last decades of Alex Trebek, I've been an off-and-on fan of the show.

Are you a fan? Have you ever tried out or been on the show? Do you think that doing well on the show is more a reflection of good game-playing than smarts (which you obviously have to have?)

Please make sure that your answers are in the form of a question.

Re: Jeopardy. Do You Watch It? Do You Learn From It?

PS...I got full of myself one time, and drove all the way down to the Sony studios in Culver City where the show is taped...and tried out to be a contestant.

Two people out of 50 made it to the next level.

Couldn't I at least gotten a Jeopardy logo pencil, or autographed picture of Alex for my trouble?

At least I tried...

I do pretty good at it when I watch. I'm not a competitive person, so I would probably never try out for the show.

Re: Jeopardy. Do You Watch It? Do You Learn From It?

I used to always watch Jeopardy, as it always followed the news on our local ABC affiliate. It still does, but after Ken Jennings lost, I have sort of stopped watching. It was really exciting there for a while with him on it. Sometimes I will tune in after the news, but usually, I am busy doing something else. I don't really learn from Jeopardy. Usually I just provide the questions to the answers I know. I'm sure I've picked up a few facts from the show over the years, but none that I remember right now.

By the way, did you know Merv Griffin also composed the theme song?

Well, it goes like this the fourth, the fifth,
the minor fall, and the major lift:
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah...

Well, your faith was strong but you needed proof;
you saw her bathing on the roof.
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.
She tied you to her kitchen chair,
she broke your throne, and she cut your hair,
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah.

Hallelujah...

Baby, I've been here before.
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor.
I used to live alone, before i knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
but love is not a victory march:
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah...

Well, there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below,
but now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when i moved in you,
and the holy dove was moving too,
and every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Well, maybe there's a God above,
but all I've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you.
It's not a cry that you hear at night.
It's not somebody who's seen the light.
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah...

Yes. I wonder if it has lyrics.

Did he also compose the Wheel of Fortune theme? (He invented that game too)

The Wheel of Fortune theme song has gone through several changes over the years, but, yes, Merv Griffin actually composed a few of the musical numbers that have appeared on that show.

I used to watch Jeopardy every night as a kid. I'll watch sometimes now if the Teen Tournament is on. I'm at least as smart as some high school nerds/smartypants.

I love Jeopardy. I'm pretty good at it but I know if I tried out there would be some catergories I'm clueless in.

I love Jeopardy! But we hardly ever watch it because DH says it makes him feel like an idiot (not that I'm any better.)

Re: Jeopardy. Do You Watch It? Do You Learn From It?

I watch every night. I always watched as a kid, then as I could catch it after I started working. Once I had a job that kept me on steady days, I picked it up again (right around the time Ken Jennings was finishing his run). I've tried the online test a couple of times now, but never gotten a callback.

I missed my audition, car broke down on the way to the studio, by the time I made it to the studio I was too late.
