This Morning, Six Flags CEO Jim Reid Anderson, took to the internet to share the new attractions coming to Six Flags parks nationwide. The attractions range from the thrilling (new coasters and drop towers), new water rides (and an all new water park) as well as some kids area expansions at some parks that really need it.

We’ll start on the West Coast and work our way East.

Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor Announce Line-Up of Thrills For 2014

August 29, 2013

It is going to be thrills for all seasons and thrills for all ages at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor in 2014.

The spring season launches with an exciting twist on two of the Valencia theme park’s beloved coasters. For a limited time, the popular suspended coaster, BATMAN The Ride and the celebrated wooden coaster, Colossus, will run BACKWARDS. In late spring, aspiring thrill seekers and their families will be treated to a revitalized children’s area, Bugs Bunny World, anchored by the launch of a new pint-sized coaster. The new coaster addition brings the total number of coasters in the children’s area to four, more than any other U.S. theme park. A new show in the area’s Carrot Club Theater will debut as well.

Summertime water park fun is also on tap in 2014 as Six Flags Hurricane Harbor introduces two impressive new thrill slides, Bonzai Pipelines, two body slides that sit side-by-side and offer a unique launching capsule system. After reaching the top of the five-story tower, guests step into the enclosed vertical capsule where the floor drops out beneath them, sending riders free-falling 40 miles-per-hour down the slide. Launch programming may be varied so that all riders launch at the same moment, or in sequence.

To round out the water park experience, Dive-In Movies will be offered in the Forgotten Sea wave pool, new dining options are planned, as well as extended operating hours.

To keep the thrills coming in the fall, Six Flags Magic Mountain’s annual Fright Fest celebration will undergo one of the largest expansions in the park’s history with new mazes and more scare zones, as well as added days and extended hours.

“We are excited to be able to offer such an array of new experiences for our Guests throughout the 2014 season,” said Bonnie Rabjohn, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor park president. “And we are staying true to our thrill promise by adding yet another coaster to our collection – this time a fun adventure for our littlest thrill seekers. No doubt we will be creating lots of magical memories at the ‘Thrill Capital of the World’ next year.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014, one of the park’s top thrill coasters, BATMAN the Ride, will be more intense than ever when riders dare to take on an all new experience – going backwards!  As the coaster climbs the 105-foot lift, riders will take in the full scope of the track as they anticipate the adventure that lies ahead. The train will reach speeds of 50 mph and travel through 2,700 feet of track, all while maneuvering hairpin turns, two vertical loops and a heartline spin with a zero-gravity force … all while going backwards! The excitement is magnified since guests cannot see the twists and turns that await them.

Trains on the iconic “woodie” Colossus, will hit the track in reverse as well. Covering 10 acres of land, with tracks measuring nearly a mile long at 4,325 feet, this classic wooden coaster features drops of more than 100 feet and a total of 14 hills including a climactic triple jump toward the end … backwards!  Colossus celebrated its 35th anniversary in June, 2013.

In addition to the summer 2014 makeover of Bugs Bunny World, a thrilling new family coaster will be added to the six-acre, interactive wonderland. Joining 12 other rides and attractions, from mini coasters to pint-sized trucks and trains, the new coaster will feature an action packed adventure with plenty of drops and thrills which kids and parents can ride together. Along with the new, record breaking fourth pint-sized coaster, a new family-friendly show will debut in the Carrot Club Theater.

With the addition of the new pint-sized coaster in 2014, the “Thrill Capital of the World” will boast 19 roller coasters, including the new Full Throttle, which debuted in June 2013 as the world’s tallest and fastest looping coaster; X2, the world’s first 5th dimensional coaster; Tatsu, the world’s tallest and fastest flying coaster; Goliath, the giant among giants; Viper and more.

Six Flags Magic Mountain announced today that 2014 Season Passes are now on sale, and provide unlimited visits for the rest of the 2013 season (including Fright Fest) and all of 2014. Season Passes can now be purchased for a low monthly payment through the annual membership program. For a limited time, with the purchase of four or more Season Passes, guests will receive a free upgrade to Gold Season Passes which is the incredible two great parks for the price of one, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor all season, and free season parking with every pass. Additional season pass perks include free tickets for friends and more!

Six Flags Magic Mountain is located at 26101 Magic Mountain Parkway, in Valencia, north of Los Angeles off Interstate 5 at the Magic Mountain Parkway exit.  The park is currently open daily through September 2 and weekends and school holidays the remainder of the year. For complete operating days and hours, and for more information call (661) 255-4111 or visit us online atwww.sixflags.com/magicmountain.

Overall we think the new additions to both Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor are great news. The expansion of the kids area is something that is long overdue as this hopefully includes some refurbishment of the rest of the area. Batman and Colossus Backwards will bring an entirely new thrill to fans of these coasters. As for Hurricane Harbor, this is the first major expansion of the park in a decade and as fans of water parks we are thrilled. The new extended hours and movies being shown in the wave pool will be extremely popular.

We also just received confirmation from the park that the two new slides are going to be replacing two existing slides at the park. The park isn’t sure which ones yet but our guess are the two black snake summit twister slides.

It’s official. Coming in 2014, Six Flags Mexico will introduce a brand new coaster experience, the first hybrid coaster of its kind in the country. Riders will elevate up to touch the sky atop the 98-foot lift hill. Then, you’ll whip over the peak and conquer the heart-racing plunge downward at an unbelievable 58 miles per hour. You’ll reach the bottom of this gut-wrenching slope before you even have time to scream.

You’ll then thunder around 3,000 feet of non-stop action, tackling surprising over-banked turns, sliding around dramatic curves, and twisting through outrageous inversions, flipping head-over-heels through a winding coil. Medusa Steel Coaster will feature two newly-themed trains topped with a mythic eye-catching Medusa head, which will run simultaneously to deliver continuous thrills and screams.

Bonzai

It’s official. Coming in 2014, Six Flags Fiesta Texas will introduce a brand new expansion and extreme new water slide complex at White Water Bay. The all-new tropically-themed area in the water park will feature several new attractions and guest amenities, including the extreme thrill slide complex, Bahama Blaster. Bahama Blaster will use a unique launching capsule to drop riders down an astounding six stories, where they’ll free-fall and twist through loops and coils at 40 miles per hour.

Bahama Blaster is the first of its kind in Texas, featuring trap-door-style launching capsules and intense tubes that provide an adrenaline rush like no other. You’ll first step inside one of the four enclosed vertical launching capsules. After the door closes, you’ll face a nerve-wracking countdown, waiting for that heart-pounding moment when the floor unexpectedly drops out below you, sending you free-falling down six stories. The launch programming may be varied to enhance the surprise and anticipation, either launching all four slides simultaneously or in a random sequence.

Side-by-side with the other riders, you’ll race through enclosed clear tubing as you encounter twists, turns, and looping spirals, before shooting into a splashy pool at the end.

Bahama Blaster is set to debut in summer 2014 as part of the all-new White Water Bay expansion. Are you ready to take on this all-new extreme water slide?

Six Flags Over Texas

SFOT

New in 2014, Six Flags Over Texas is expanding our children’s area, complete with new rides, attractions, and rest areas. Plus, Hurricane Harbor adds a multi-featured water slide.

The children’s area of the park will debut an all-new refreshing expansion. The kid-friendly section will be the perfect place for thrill-seekers-in-training with tons of new features, including an interactive play area and brand new kids’ rides. The pint-sized rides in the area offer gentle thrills with miniature drops, easygoing turns, and mild speeds so the little ones can work up to the bigger thrills.

The renovation will also provide more seating and shaded areas. Parents can sit back and watch the kids play, or the entire family can take a break from the action to rest and cool off in between rides.

In summer 2014, North Texas’ largest water park, Hurricane Harbor, will also unveil a new slippery slide. The multi-featured water slide will take riders up over 45 feet in the air, then accelerate them through a winding slick course. The thrill slide will include rapid speeds, twisting spins, and plunging drops that provide an adrenaline rush and splashy experience like no other.

The new children’s expansion and water slide are set to debut in 2014. Are you ready to take on these all-new thrills?

main_TsunamiSoaker

New in 2014, Six Flags St. Louis adds the first interactive water ride in the park. The Tsunami Soaker will be the newest addition to the park’s lineup of family thrills as this wet and wild attraction provides an energetic and engaging experience like no other.

Tsunami Soaker is like your classic teacup ride with an exciting twist. You and up to five other passengers will hop into one of the nine round boats that sit atop a circular floor in a pool of water. As the ride begins, the floor will lower into the water until it disappears, allowing your boat to float and splash ‘ ‘round and ‘round . Your raft will spin in circles while the other boats twist around you, creating a dizzying experience.

Each seat on the boat is armed with a giant water gun so every rider can participate in the action. While your boat rotates around the wet course, you can engage in an adrenaline-pumping water battle, shooting your pistol at other riders and innocent bystanders, soaking them with bursts of water. This drenching water attraction will be a great way to cool off on a hot day and enjoy a fun family adventure.

The new Tsunami Soaker is set to debut late spring 2014 and will be located in the Gateway to the West section of the park. Are you ready to get soaked on this new ride?

Record Breaking Rollercoaster Coming to Six Flags Great America in 2014
Fastest Wooden Roller Coaster with Steepest and Tallest Drop on the Planet

August 29, 2013

Get ready for the new GIANT in the world of wooden roller coasters! Six Flags Great America announced plans for the next addition to its arsenal of world-class rides with an all-new wooden roller coaster. New for 2014, Goliath will be the fastest wooden roller coaster in the world and feature the world’s tallest and steepest drop. All total, this wooden marvel will tout three world records making it the most extreme coaster of its kind on the planet!

“Six Flags Great America is known for introducing record-breaking and first-of-its-kind roller coasters,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America park president. “Goliath will be unmatched – setting not only one, but three world records and featuring two inversions. All of the ride elements, including an 85 degree plunge down the tallest drop on a wooden roller coaster, make Goliath the most extreme wooden roller coaster in the world. We are thrilled to bring this record-smashing coaster to our guests for the 2014 season.”

Goliath takes riders up a mammoth 165 foot lift hill, then plunges them down a record-setting 180 foot, 85 degree drop, crowning it the tallest and steepest drop on a wooden roller coaster in the world. Riders will gain record-breaking speeds of up to 72 miles-per-hour and blast into jaw-dropping maneuvers including three over-banked turns, a 180 degree zero G roll, an inverted drop and an inverted zero G stall. Goliath completely annihilates the wooden roller coaster competition.

Record Breaking Facts
• Fastest wooden roller coaster – 72 miles-per-hour
• Tallest drop on a wooden roller coaster – 180 feet
• Steepest drop on a roller coaster – 85 degrees

Goliath will make its home in the County Fair section of the park. Construction begins this fall and Goliath is scheduled to open spring of 2014.

The biggest Fright Fest ever is coming this fall. Six Flags Great America’s annual celebration will undergo the largest expansion in the park’s history with more haunted houses and ghouls than ever.

Six Flags Great Adventure Announces World Record-Breaking Ride for 2014
World’s Largest Theme Park to Debut World’s Tallest Drop Ride and Bids Farewell to a Classic Coaster

August 29, 2013

New Jersey’s Six Flags Great Adventure will shatter the world record for tallest drop ride with the addition of the 41-story Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom in 2014.

Connected to the iconic Kingda Ka roller coaster—the 456-foot monster that ranks as the world’s tallest coaster and fastest in North America—Zumanjaro will hoist riders 415 feet into the sky and rocket them back to Earth at 90 miles per hour while Kingda Ka trains launch right toward them at speeds of up to 128 miles per hour.

“Zumanjaro solidifies Six Flags Great Adventure’s dominance as the Northeast’s thrill capital,” said John Fitzgerald, park president. “This is precisely the world-class, record-breaking attraction our guests have come to expect from Great Adventure. Zumanjaro is destined to top many ‘must ride’ lists in 2014.”

Three soaring Zumanjaro towers will be built on the face of the massive Kingda Ka coaster debuting during the park’s 41st season. Each drop tower will feature a gondola with eight riders.

The gondolas will rise to the top of the tower in approximately 30 seconds. Riders will pause for a few terrifying moments, 41 stories in the air—even higher than London’s Big Ben and twice as high as the Statue of Liberty—allowing them to catch a glimpse of the skyscrapers in Philadelphia 52 miles to the south before gravity plunges them back to ground level in less than 10 seconds.

“Zumanjaro pushes thrills to heights never imagined when Great Adventure first opened in 1974,” said park historian and author Harry Applegate. “You could stack the tallest major attractions from Great Adventure’s opening season on top of one another, including the Big Wheel, Log Flume, Runaway Train and Skyride, and you would still be more than 50 feet shy of Zumanjaro.”

The name “Zumanjaro” was inspired by the African influences of Safari Off Road Adventure, the attraction that combined Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari into the world’s largest theme park. A newly-themed animal section adjacent to Zumanjaro will feature mischievous and playful Anubis baboons native to Africa. For nearly 40 years, these baboons were a favorite of Safari visitors, but not included in the new Safari Off Road Adventure.

“Throughout this season, guests have inquired about the baboons. We can finally announce that they will be the stars of this newly-themed area,” Fitzgerald said. Guests will be able to see the lively primates, also known as olive baboons, up close in their new habitat formerly known as Safari Discoveries. These members of the Old World Monkey family “have a highly organized social structure and their interactions are fascinating to watch,” he added.

Zumanjaro and the new baboon exhibit are slated for a spring debut in 2014.

The End of an Era: Rolling Thunder
The introduction of Zumanjaro spells the end of an era for one of the park’s classic roller coasters, Rolling Thunder. The coaster, which opened in 1979, has delivered more than 42 million rides in its nearly 35-year history. Although the classic, dual track “woodie” remained a staple at the park, its popularity waned over the years.

“Advances in technology have led to a new generation of rides with the sleek intensity of El Toro, the world’s No. 1 wooden coaster,” Fitzgerald said. Guests will be able to enjoy Rolling Thunder until it closes to the public September 8, 2013 to make way for construction.

Hurricane Harbor to Expand Cabana Service with New Tiki Bar
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor will expand its first-class cabana rental service with the introduction of Cabana Cove. Cabanas offer a private escape for water park-goers, and a new tiki bar will deliver beverage service directly to the cabanas to enhance the relaxing, island-style experience.

Six Flags America to Open New Mardi Gras Themed Area Featuring Two New Rides
Maryland’s Largest Theme Park Announces Ragin’ Cajun Roller Coaster and French Quarter Flyers Family Ride

August 29, 2013

Six Flags America, fulfilling its commitment to innovation and new attractions every season, today announced a new Mardi Gras section of the park along with the addition of two exhilarating new rides. Ragin’ Cajun, a spinning, fast-track roller coaster, will be the theme park’s 9th roller coaster. Ragin’ Cajun will be joined by a new family-friendly, flying ride dubbed French Quarter Flyers. Both attractions will be located in the festive new Mardi Gras section of the park.

Guests will discover a celebration every day as snappy jazz and zydeco tunes pour into the streets of Mardi Gras. The entire area will be a party inspired by the energy of New Orleans with delicious foods, exciting games, tasty beverages and fun retail items to match the lively spirit of the South.

“Not one, but two new rides and a completely new look will bring the celebratory style of the Big Easy to Six Flags America,” said Rick Howarth, park president. “The new Mardi Gras area marks a considerable expansion to our excellent collection of rides and a major enhancement to our theming.”

Ragin’ Cajun is a fast track roller coaster that twists, turns and tilts as groups of four riders zigzag through 1,378 feet of dizzying 360° spins, breathtaking drops, sudden twists and erratic speeds. The roller coaster’s uniquely-designed train spins independently as it zips through a course as wild as its name and will add a new and adrenaline-charged ride experience to the existing coaster collection.

The young and fun at heart will love French Quarter Flyers, a family ride that will delight both kids and adults. This new attraction features eight individual flying cars. Each vehicle has a stationary rear wing and a moveable front wing and can travel at speeds up to 40 miles-per-hour. Guests will be the pilots and control their own riding destiny as they pump up the thrill for a more intense wild flight or simply sit back, take it easy and enjoy the ride.

Ragin’ Cajun and French Quarter Flyers are the first of their kind at Six Flags America, adding diverse new thrills found nowhere else in the region.

In addition to the new rides and improvements, Six Flags America is preparing to launch the park’s biggest and scariest Fright Fest ever featuring “Thrills by Day” and “Fright by Night”.  The daylight hours will be filled with thrilling rides and fun-filled shows, but as the sun sets the park quickly turns to the dark side.

With five new, ultra-scary haunted attractions, Fright Fest is the ultimate terrifying experience. Fright Fest begins Saturday, September 28, 2013 and operates every weekend until October 27, 2013.

Six Flags New England

main_NESkyScreamer

It’s official. Coming in 2014, Six Flags New England will introduce the tallest attraction in the park’s history, and the tallest swing ride on the planet: A brand new record-breaking swing ride. The New England Sky Screamer will be the tallest of its kind in the world, lifting riders up over 400 feet in the air, swinging them around at an exhilarating 40 miles per hour, and feature breathtaking views and stomach-churning spins.

The New England Sky Screamer will be the newest landmark of the Six Flags New England skyline. As the tallest swing ride in the world, this record-breaking spinning tower stands over 40 stories above the ground and provides an adrenaline rush like no other. First, you and 23 brave flyers will strap into your open-air seat with your legs dangling above the ground. The New England Sky Screamer will start to swing you around in a circle as you elevate to the very top of the tower to touch the sky, eventually reaching heart-pounding speeds of 40 miles per hour and heights of 400 feet. You’ll be so high up that only the birds will hear you scream.

The ride will provide a beautiful panoramic view of the entire park and surrounding areas, including the Connecticut River and New England horizon, before it all whirls around in a blur. When you look down, you’ll see your feet swinging below you and aerial views of all your favorite attractions. You’ll soar around and around with the wind in your hair before coming back down the tower and landing on the ground.

The extreme New England Sky Screamer is set to debut in summer 2014. Are you ready to take on this all-new swing?

La Ronde

main_SFLaRondeDemon

It’s official. Coming in 2014, La Ronde will introduce a high-flying inverted experience: a brand new swinging, twisting, and spinning ride. The all-new Demon will feature impressive heights, heart-racing swings, unpredictable spins, stomach-tightening flips, and soaking water jets. This new attraction will provide an adrenaline rush like no other when it lifts riders up 40 meters in the air and flips them head-over-heels, swinging them side-to-side for a wild adventure. You won’t be able to tell which way is up in this giant gondola.

You’ll take a seat with 31 other bold riders and load back-to-back into the giant gondola structure. The two metal arms holding you up can rotate, pivot, swing, and move randomly. You’ll first complete several back and forth side-to-side swings. Then, rising up 14 meters, the flexible arms will rotate irregularly, causing the entire gondola to move, turn, and rock with unpredictable movement. The thrill ride plays on your anticipation as you wait for the next wild motion that will flip you entirely upside down in a gut-wrenching inverted hang, spin you around in a whirling rush, or toss you high and low. The giant arm will sway you and twist you until you can’t see straight. Demon offers inverted views of the park as you hang up in the air and twist upside down.

If that’s not enough excitement, you’ll also have to anticipate the sixteen water jets that spray up from the platform. These bursts of water will shoot out erratically to soak riders at random moments during the ride.

Are you ready to take on this all-new spinning ride?

Great Escape

main_LKGExtremeSupernova1

It’s official. Coming in 2014, The Great Escape will introduce a high- flying, spinning adventure. The all-new Extreme Supernova will lift riders up 50 feet in the air and flip them head-over-heels for a wild, adrenaline-packed adventure. Supernova will feature impressive heights, astonishing speeds, heart-racing swings, unpredictable spins, and stomach-tightening flips. This new attraction will provide an adrenaline rush like no other and you won’t be able to tell which way is up in this giant pendulum.

You’ll take a seat with 15 other bold riders and load into the giant pendulum-shaped structure. Suspended from the axis above, you’ll face outward as the floor drops from below you. You’ll first complete several back and forth swings, high and low, elevating up near-vertically before flying through to the other side. The thrill ride plays on your anticipation as you wait for the next pivot that will flip you entirely upside down in a gut-wrenching inverted flip. The Extreme Supernova offers fantastic inverted views of the park and Splashwater Kingdom as you hang up in the air and twist upside down.

While the giant arm sways you, you’ll also be spinning in circles simultaneously, twisting around and around until you can’t see straight. The constant swinging and whirling will deliver maximum G-forces, high-flying sensations, and extreme dizziness.

The Extreme Supernova is set to debut in spring 2014 and will sit next to The Comet. Are you ready to take on this all-new spinning ride?

A LOOK AT SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN

With the announcements from Six Flags worldwide, we thought we should look at the current state of one of the flagship properties of the company, Magic Mountain.  It’s been since the beginning of the summer season since our last Magic Mountain update. The park has been pulling in great numbers over the summer but not without a few hiccups. We’ll bring you up to speed on what’s been going on at the park.

Full Throttle

Full Throttle has been open for almost 2 months already and minor improvements have been installed in the Full Throttle area. No permanent covering is over the station yet but some permanent queue railings are going in.

5
In addition, permanent walls have been added all the way around the Full Throttle area. At least they got to it eventually.
4
This one seen on the path to the old Flashback station/Season Pass Center
7
And this one, finally removing the temporary fence near the old Log Jammer entrance
6
In front of Log Jammer a game area has been set up with some signage for the High Sierra Territory.

While the ride has been getting generally positive reviews all summer it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. The ride had to go to 1-train operation a few weeks ago while a part was on order from the manufacturer. No word on what it was but the ride was back up to 2-train operations within a few days.

Park Refurbishments

Elsewhere in the park, a couple of rides have had to have their capacity reduced or closed due to refurbishments.

Scream has been running only 1 train for most of the summer. Considering the ride has 3 available trains this is something that probably shouldn’t happen, especially in the middle of the summer.

11
And in an unexpected development, Apocalypse had to completely close for some re-tracking. This was an un-planned event, but no word on what brought on the sudden closure of one of the park’s signature attractions.

15

19
No visible work was going on when we were up in the Sky Tower.

The Sky Tower was also down for a couple of weeks. When we rode this past weekend it appeared some cables had been replaced.

Lastly, Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom was down for some cable repairs in July. This was to address the issue of grease getting on riders. Despite this fix, we experienced some grease spatter again.
10
Overall, the amount of refurbishments being made during the busy summer season is something the park needs to avoid. Was it just bad luck or poor planning? It’s curious.

Around the park

3
We have seen no Fright Fest building going on except for this sign in the entrance area.
13
Some work does look like it’s going on in the old Batman Theater. Not sure if this is for Fright Fest or something else.
16
Apparently X2 went down temporarily. Reports are that it is an issue with the chain lift. If you are heading to the park over the next few days, don’t expect it to be open.

14
Due to there now only being 3 water rides in the park, the lines for Jet Stream and Roaring Rapids are quite long, even when the rest of the park doesn’t seem very crowded.

17
HOLY MOLEY!

12

Some new stilt walkers were near Bugs Bunny World. They seem to be VERY popular with park guests. Even more than the permanent photo locations for Looney Tunes and DC Comics characters.

Some permanent queues are now set up in the parking lots for the new buses. If you are parked in the first lot it’s still much quicker to walk than to take the new bus. It took me almost 10 minutes to get to the entrance from the first lot. It’s a 3-4 minute walk at most.
