Post Texas Giant to become steel-track coaster

This is from www.screamscape.com ; Texas Giant will have all of its track removed and replaced with steel tracks. Ride will not reopen until Spring 2011.

I've ridden Texas Giant; I don't know if this is a great idea; what do you think?

I've also ridden, and it was pretty good I thought, in the front seat. Towards the back was another story.

Anything that can be done to make the ride more rideable is IMO a good thing.

Re: Texas Giant to become steel-track coaster

^ Agreed. I thought Texas Giant was a really fun ride in the front, but not so much the rear.

I've not ridden any other coaster w/ this steel rail treatment so I really can't form that great of an opinion about it other than an effort to decrease downtime is good.

It's also interesting that a new species of coaster is emerging in these wood/steel hybrids - that is a coaster with steel rails on a wood structure. They've been classified as steel in the past, but now with this, I think we need to create a 3rd category for the wood/steel hybrids since they aren't 100% steel, but they aren't 100% wood either.

Cedar Point was calling Gemini- which runs on tubular steel rails with a wooden structure, a wooden coaster until into the 1990s. I'm sure Six Flags will call the New Giant a wooden coaster, just so they can claim the record of steepest drop on a wooden coaster

This has been rumored here in the DFW metroplex for a while (ever since I first reported this story way back in August, I think). I've seen construction pics and its DEFINATELY STILL 100% STILL WOODEN as of right now.

Perhaps "100% Wooden" wasn't really what I meant. What I meant to say was "the track is 100% not tubular steel". Sorry for the confusion.

El Toro isn't anything like this - El Toro is a prefab coaster- but it's a wooden track bed with steel rails on top (just like any traditional "wooden" coaster, but solid machined "blocks" of wood instead of laminated layers of wood for the roadbed). The New Giant's roadbed and rail surface is one giant I-beam of steel- NOT tubular steel.
