RUMOR: Colossus to get major Refurbishment in 2014?

In what would be one of the more awesome things to come out of SFMM in quite some time ... let's just hope this is true and that if it is true they don't go all crazy with 47 barrel rolls.

    Six Flags Magic Mountain
2014-2015 - Colossus Refurbishment - (1/10/13) Screamscape sources tell us that management at Six Flags Magic Mountain may have received early confirmation that Colossus will be tapped to be the next Six Flags coaster to get the Iron Horse treatment following the transformation of Rattler to Iron Rattler at Fiesta Texas this year. No word yet on just how much will be changed, but the iconic support structure is expected to remain essentially the same. If true, look for Colossus to go away forever before the end of the year, though it seems like the park may try to promote the final days of Colossus rather than just quietly shut it down, so you may get some early warning.

Its SFMM, so they will find some way to screw this up.

They'd really do a great job if the just remove the midcourse brake run and not slow the chain lift to a crawl at the top of the lift hill.
    Current coaster count: 155
100th coaster: Phantom's Revenge at Kennywood
    150th coaster: Intimidator at Carowinds
last new park addition: Fun Spot America

We'll expect a spring opening, pushed back to a summer opening, & Superman to be closed somehow during the construction. lol

Re: RUMOR: Colossus to get major Refurbishment in 2014?

I've heard good things about these "remakes"... but as I understand it, haven't all the rides done in this style so far been twisters? Colossus is essentially more of a double out and back. Doesn't seem like it gives them as much to work with. It seems like Ghostrider would be a better candidate for this.

But they also seem very capable of surprising me, so who knows? While the ride is not in as bad of shape as many make it out (I mean, I feel like I've been on plenty of wooden coasters that were worse), it certainly couldn't hurt things.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

^ That's a good point Jester. Texas Giant was probably the biggest conversion they've done so far and that's not anywhere close to the size of Colossus. This would also be the first dual track coaster they've done.

It will be interesting to see where they go with this. I'm hoping they let Rocky Mountain tell them what "can" be done vs Six Flags saying "this is what we want done".

Most of these have also included MAJOR changes in the layout of the rides, will be interesting to see if Colossus follows that trend.

As far as Ghostrider, I don't think that ride needs any layout changes, just the "topper track" that would restore it to it's original glory.

^ It would certainly give Magic Mountain the "records" they love (longest hybrid wood/steel coaster?).

I know way back when, they opted for throwing I-Beams in place of the layered wooden parts in some places (hard pressed to find any decent shots of this). Not sure how much of the coaster has been given this treatment. If they were to do the Texas Giant treatment, I would expect a much more "extreme" rendition of Colossus. Maybe some hard hills, or some track crossovers. Nothing too out of spec with what we see now, but a much more "extreme" rendition of it.

Like Revolution (formerly the Great American Revolution) and Gold Rusher, you can usually walk right onto Colossus. Making this more of a draw would be good thing for the park. It had the tallest drop of a coaster when it opened, but is towered now by Goliath. A refurb might give this lonely ride a second incarnation.

It was mainly the first drop that got the I-Beam treatment, but it's REALLY helped.

^haha no, I really do like the coaster alot.

I can really feel how fast it is going and to me anyway its not that bumpy so I really do like how you can really feel the G's unlike many other coaster at the park

I just hope they don't lose the sense of speed when they redo the track

I'll miss backwards Colossus if it turns out they can't get it to do that anymore. Backwards Colossus in the very last car is a totally different experience from the forwards version.
