Looking for a old-timey themed restaurant

    Hey all,

I am going to be in SoCal for a week starting Jan 24, 2010. I was planning on checking out the Cicada Club (a Sunday night only restaurant with a 1940s theme link) but they are closed for a private party during that Sunday.

So, I am looking for an alternative. Ruby's Diner sounds great... I have been to Musso & Frank, The Pig and Whistle and Mels... and we have a Johnny Rocket in our local mall.

Any other places anyone can recommend (for casual or fine dining anywhere in Southern California) that has an old-timey theme?

    The older the better.

Ruby's is GREAT, but i wouldn't call it "old timey" It is 50's themed, like Mel's without the history (but the food is A LOT better).
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Ruby's is actually themes to the 1940s.

Ruby's are located in various malls and locations around the DLR. Depending on how old they are the 1940s theme varies in degrees of immersion and authenticity.

If you want to be fully immersed in the 1940s theming I recommend going to the Ruby's at the end of the Balboa Pier located on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. This is actually the original Ruby's restaurant. It is small -- it is located in what used to be an old bait shack. But the 1940s themeing is persistent both outside and in, and being at the end of the pier removes you from the everyday world.

There is also a Ruby's at the end of the Huntington Beach Pier but that one is newer and the exterior design is not as authentic.

Time wise, both locations are the same distance from the DLR even though on a map Huntington Beach appears to be closer.
