Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas BBQ, Van Nuys CA

Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas BBQ Restaurant
8136 (N.) Sepulveda Blvd. (1/2 Bk. S of Roscoe Bl.)
    Van Nuys CA 91402
    (818) 780-6701 or 782-2480

This is the perfect place if you are looking for something different - it's not the usual molassas based pork and beef Louisiana Q like everyone else around here (like Bear Pit or Chris' & Pitts) makes, but the Texas style dry-rub and vinegar-based-sauce Beef BBQ, Brisket or Ribs, with Hot-links or Chicken for alternatives. A handful of sweet pickle chips, some Cole Slaw or Potato Salad, good beans, bread to soak up the sauce...

There isn't any decor to speak of - but you came to eat well, and eat well you will. Simple food done right. Reasonably priced for the huge portions served - $12 - 18 per person. Beer and Wine licensed.

Be prepared to take some home with you for tomorrow's lunch, bring an icebox to keep it cold overnight if you're a tourist - and don't ask the hotel to microwave it for you without watching that plate at all times, or it might come back a bit lighter...

About an hour's drive north of Disneyland if you're visiting. Up I-5 to 'Ventura Fwy' US-134 West, to 'San Diego Fwy' I-405 North, to Roscoe Blvd. exit. Go East (right) on Roscoe about 0.3 mile to Sepulveda, turn South (right), 0.2 miles on left.

    Cash - Visa - AX - Diners - Discover - MC.
On-site parking (just enough) or street parking.

HC Accessible in ground floor restaurant but it's an old building with smaller aisles. NOTE: The restrooms are clean but tiny, have token locks (ask for one on the way out) and are NOT ADA Compliant - fine if you can transfer or get 6 feet on crutches or cane. (Bring someone out to watch your chair, the restrooms are outside.)

Damn, now I want to go "Get a prescription filled at the Doctors" for dinner. Oh well, what a way to go.

Dr. Hogly Wogly's is one of Victoria's and my favorites!
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

It's been many years since I've been to Hogly Wogly's. Be warned, it's not for the faint of heart...bring a BIG appetite and lots of napkins! Yummm...best BBQ around!

Dang, sounds awesome. I just wish we had something here (in Phoenix) that sounded that great. Detour time I think.

If you are driving out to Disneyland from Arizona, just head a bit north to get on the 57 or 210, then the Ventura 134... Yeah, you have to backtrack a bit to get to the Park, but it's worth it.

We can't let Chris & Pitts and Bear Pit get all the glory.

Then again, for anyone coming down from Central California who wants a stop along the way for the standard Missouri style (molasses sauce), there's always Red's BBQ in Simi Valley - but that's another review...

You mentioned the Bear Pit! That's right off Sepulveda in Mission Hills. Lived there for a few years. So good! Now I am craving BBQ
