It'll only take about half an hour to get to the beach from Disneyland. Huntington Beach is ok.
The two closest beaches are Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. Even though on the map Huntington Beach looks closer they will both take about the same time -- 20 to 25 minutes -- to get to from the DLR.
Of the two beaches I prefer Newport Beach. In Newport a good family beach is in the area of Newport Beach known as the Balboa Peninsula, near the Balboa Pier. There are restaurants, shops, and a small area with a ferris wheel, carousel, and arcades nearby.
Also in the Corona del Mar portion of Newport Beach is Big Corona del Mar State Beach, or as the locals refer to, as "Big Corona". This is in a residential area, but it is a nice beach with fire pits and a snack shop. Off to the right of this beach is a small area called Pirates Cove (named becuase of the Erroll Flynn pirate movies that were filmed there). The water there is calm, which is good for small children.
So there are some suggestions. If you have aby questions let me know. Have a wonderful trip!
Water will be cold regardless of where you go...
However, here is a thread dedicated to your question already posted here from a few weeks ago:
Fun beaches within 1-2 hrs. drive of Anaheim?
On my honeymoon trip we will probably visiting Laguna and Newport beaches.
Huntington, Seal, Newport.
Bring rollerblades or skates. Nice long pathway.
Parts of Huntington Beach have charcoal grills and fire pits. On weekends these are taken quite early, as they are first-come first-serve.
Certain weekends are busier than others at the beach. Check for volleyball tournaments or surf contest. Sure, they're fun to watch, but they also mean more logistics planning. (Mainly parking.)

Thank you all for the FYI.
I am learing my way around these boards so thank you for all the help.
thanks for the tip too..
just do what you think...
DisneyIPresume posted this and I thought it interesting enough to repost it here.
Oh and thank you for finding this... I had no idea.
Re: Fun beaches within 1-2 hrs. drive of Anaheim?
Hello again.
Here is a link to the city of Newport Beach website that gives a lot of additional information on the tidepools at Little Corona, including directions and a loosely drawn map. Click on the different links once you get there. There is a lot of information. Apparently removal of even the shells on the beach itself is punishable of a fine of up to $1000.00! I didn't know there was an actual fine until I saw this just now! I would imagine that similar regulations are in effect at the other area tidepools, including those in the city of Laguna Beach. Perhaps you can all look at the nice shells and buy a little bag of seashells at a gift shop. Or you can do what I have done before I actually saw this just now and just take some -- no one noticed, I suppose fortunately.

I was just in Newport the other day, visiting my mother on her birthday. She lives in an assisted living/medical center there. I was reminded once again what a beautiful area that is.
Thank you POISONEDAPPLES!
