We'll probably have a couple extra hours on the way back from Yosemite to spend somewhere. I was thinking about the Santa Monica Pier area.
What is there to do there that is worthwhile? Is it worth the stop?
Any other recommendations?

Uh, hmm, what's the nice way to put it.....
No. It is not worthwhile, not worth the stop. Not for a naive Pittsburgher and his new bride. I'd have to steel you up for the culture shock first. It takes a bit of getting used to, this from first-hand experience.
I see you want something near the airport. I think Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach might be a little better. (Just a little.) Those are past LAX, but closer to LAX than Santa Monica. Shops, restaurants, and the beach.

Do yourself a favor and just stick with the beaches in OC. They are much better than what's in LAC.
whoa we have some nice beaches in LA, manhattan/hermosa/seal i mean granted yeah oc has good ones to but we arent that bad
OC will not be practical. He'll be returning from National Parks on his way to LAX. Has a few hours to kill. Traffic variance makes for hazardous planning.
Go to Manhattan, rent some bikes or roller blades. Cruise the path.

I reject your reality and substitute my own
I love the Santa Monica Pier! It has a cute tiny amusement Park, a carrousel and a few tiny shops. The pier itself is nice and relaxing. I just love how historic it is. A few blocks from the pier is a mall and pedestrian mall.
Oh.... Venic Beach is my absolute fave but but your fiancee probably would die of shock LOL

I love the Santa Monica Pier. There is a "mini-amuesment area" and also some small knick-knack shops to go through. If you are going to be in the area, it's worth the stop. I think you will enjoy it.

As for recommendations, Manhattan Beach. I love that place...it's gorgeous. Venice Beach is quite lovely too.

Manhattan is much closer to the airport, so it might be a bit more convenient for you. Overall, it's really better. Santa Monica Pier, well...I wouldn't call it 'nice'. It's sort of a mini eastern-boardwalk sort of thing. A few amusements, a few shops, a few eateries. Cleanliness is so-so for the pier. The ocean there is actually one of the dirtiest spots along the entire coastline.
If SM pier is a must, Yacks, then you need to walk down to Jodi Maroni's for sausage.

You can park in Venice instead.
Also, there is Robin Rose Ice Cream

And the original Hot Dog Stick (the "on a" is not on the sign) right at the SM Pier. One Fresh-squeezed lemonade with sherry for me, thanks.
BTW June 15, 5PM-8PM is free HDOAS day.

I used to go to the Santa Monica pier a loot, but this was about 14 years ago. the last time I went about 8 years ago it had really gone downhill. I didn't feel safe and have not been back.
