What if Metro Fares were Based on Time & Distance?

A fare system that would be based on the time spent riding public transit or distance traveled instead of the current per boarding price will be discussed at a Metro committee meeting on Thursday, according to Damien Newton at StreetsblogLA. It's just a report that studies what other transit systems have done, but if something were to go forward, it's rife with challenges, including updating the controversial TAP system. Currently, it costs $1.50 per boarding or $6 for a day pass on most of the system. Some routes include a confusing zone charge.

Appears currently the per boarding fare is cheaper then down here in San Diego but your day pass costs a buck more. (we are 2.25 one way, or 5 per day or 72 per month for most of the system.)

Makes sense if the variable costs of the system are dependent on number of miles.
I'm guessing there are a lot of fixed costs.
Sure, a 100-mile commute should cost more than a 4-mile commute.

But if it costs me and three others more than the cost of driving, we'll pool it. And the other bus/train commuters will suffer if a few hundred thousand former commuters think the same way.

Epstein : Metro Needs a “Plan B” for 30/10 (HuffPo)

We can write all the letters and blogs, and hold all the feel-good rallies we want but with Washington plagued by a partisan malaise the likes of which this country has never seen, I have come to recognize that getting the Congressional seal of approval that 30/10 needs to get started building may not be realistic.

So here's what I propose happen today, not tomorrow. Metro should start meeting with Wall Street, the union and public pension fund managers, and the sovereign wealth advisors to hammer out a plan for privately financing the needed construction.
    Well that's a pessimistic view!

    1. Tunneling is expensive, and should be a last-resort.
    2. I'd like that High-Desert freeway to have the middle median cleared and ready for the HSR to Vegas. Not too much to ask, right? Current highway to Vegas is somewhat dangerous, especially during the rare rainstorm.
    3. El Monte station will be very nice!

Pretty much all day every day, that stretch is slow. I haven't figured out why just yet. Northbound, there's a big bend just after The 134 interchange where you can't see traffic ahead. And then, you do. It's like, "Wow, look at all those cars ahead of me! I need to slow down!"
Or, is it the mish-mash of The 134 traffic combined with lots of cars wanting to get off at one of the Burbank exits? Even the "fast lane" is slow.

I've become convinced it's the places where two freeways intersect that cause most of the problems. Everyone has to move accross and get into one or two lanes to transition. That's why once you get past the 405, travel west on the 1-0-1 opens up... No more intersections.

The 134-5 split does not work, you can't go from southbound I-5 to westbound 134 or from eastbound 134 to northbound I-5.

We have the same problem where the 101-134 and 170 meet. You have to exit the freeway and take streets to reconnect to the other freeway.

So, the solution is no more interchanges??
    It's a couple of problems:
    1. You can try to design the interchange for the busiest times, but to no avail. That business keeps on increasing.
    2. "Busy time" for one transition lane might differ from the "busy time" of the merging freeway. Combined with limited space, and one of those busy times loses.

The 405 West clears up AFTER Balboa Blvd. That's two miles west of The 405. From my observations, it's always only one or two cars/trucks slower than the rest that slow every lane down.

The 134 - The 5 interchange is screwy, but fewer onramps should lead to better traffic. So, why doesn't it? Is it caused by all that Western Blvd. traffic coming on The North 5 after the interchange, in effect stretching out the interchange traffic?
I think a flyover from left-lane The 134 West to left lane The 5 North might do the trick.

Haven't you heard of taking your shoes off two hours before your flight and standing in the lineup. And the amount of jet fuel you're burning into the air we breathe?

Or the words HIGH SPEED which precede RAIL and indicate a new level of speed you have not experienced before in this country?

Unless you've done it in France, Japan or China, you don't know what it's like. It's like flying on the surface of the Earth, it's an awesome smooth fast and fun way to travel. I'll use it over driving (which I prefer to flying) to go to Northern California.

Republican Wave Could Spell Trouble for High-Speed Rail Projects from Coast to Coast

Intent on demonstrating their resistance to virtually all of President Obama’s policy objectives, Republicans nationwide have staked out an anti-rail position that they hope will stand out as the fiscally reasonable choice when they present themselves in this fall’s elections. Though the current Democratic administration will remain in power at least until early 2013, shifting control of Congress and potential power changes at the state level could dramatically reduce the ability of the Department of Transportation to advance its plans for the development of intercity rail.
