I'm glad the first section will at least go from Modesto to Bakersfield, but it will still seem like a failure if it doesn't go north and south from there pretty soon afterwards.

Clearly, the deciders need a better way to collect data than merely announcing meeting dates and times and opening meeting doors to all. Only the fervent show up. That's a biased sample.

This door-to-door method seems to work.

I remember when "The Plant" was the GM plant.

Elevated Monorail would be perfect for VN Blvd. At street level, it would be in the way.
In fact, I'd make a loop (no, not THAT kind):
    1. Starting at Ventura Blvd, North on Van Nuys Blvd to Foothill Blvd.
    2. Northwest on Foothill Blvd to Roxford St (cant find an extra-wide street up there).
    3. Southwest on Roxford St to The 5.
4, Southeast along The 5 to The 405.
    5. South along The 405 to Sepulveda Blvd.
    6. South along Sepulveda Blvd to VA Hospital -- OK, OK, to Ventura Blvd.
    7. East on Ventura Blvd to Van Nuys Blvd.

Loops mean no waiting on train while driver gets out and goes to opposite end.
Loops mean no scheduled cross-overs. (Will need them for emergencies, though.)

If ever there were a proposal ripe for the bipartisanship Obama says he hopes to cultivate in the next Congress, it is 30/10, which encourages local initiative and allows for further economic stimulus through growth that doesn't add to the federal deficit.

Feds Approve Subway to the Sea, Funding to Follow

The FTA's approval means that federal funds are forthcoming; Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said yesterday bucks "for the project and a $1.37 billion regional connector could be included in next year's federal budget."

Regional Connector plans are changed to appease Little Tokyo residents

Connector Refines Plans to Fit Into Little Tokyo :: blogdowntown

The refined station takes up only half the space of the previous design, fitting into the northern half of the block bounded by 1st, Alameda, 2nd and Central. More importantly, it creates a gentle curve onto 2nd Street that could allow Metro to use open land at 1st and Alameda to insert the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) needed for construction of the underground line.

I like it. I wonder why it wasn't proposed before.
I'm guessing someone wanted their parcel (the one that would be bought just south of the "blue" piece in the picture) bought at some over-market price.

If this version of the Downtown Connector is built, the Gold Line will be permanently divided, no more trains from East LA to Pasadena or Pasadena to East LA. The Blue line will go up to Pasadena and the Expo line will run down the East LA extension. I wonder if the GOLD color will even exist or if they'll give it to the Expo line?

How about taking one train from Ontario Airport to downtown Long Beach? That's quite a ride.

Re: Mass Transit 2 the Disneyland Resort

A preliminary study was already conducted on getting the train to the Ontario Airport, a distance of about seven miles, and it showed that it's feasible.

"The next steps of the project revolve around the completion of the Alternatives Analysis (expected to begin in late 2011)," writes Rodrigo Gonzalez, Media Coordinator for the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority. That study, which will look at the route and stations, will take 18-24 months, he noted. There was talk of the train using the Cucamonga Creek Channel to get to Ontario.

There's a few things that may trip up the extension--the Authority doesn't own the right-of-way like they do with the other Foothill phases. They also don't have Measure R funding, or any funding currently, to extend the line to the airport. But if they get the ROW and the dough, "Expected start date for revenue operations for the LA/Ontario Airport Extension ranges from 2021 to 2025," according to Gonzalez.

Re: Mass Transit 2 the Disneyland Resort

Some prominent Orange County officials are questioning the wisdom of building a long-planned mega transit center in Anaheim that would help deliver tourists to Disneyland and link local rail and bus services to the state's proposed bullet train.

Several board members of the Orange County Transportation Authority say they doubt that the so-called ARTIC station is eligible to receive about $99 million currently earmarked for the project from a county half-cent sales tax. They say the Measure M road and transit money should be used to pay for improving existing stations, not building new ones.

They also assert that if the state's high-speed rail project is canceled because of money problems, it could turn the $184-million station into a white elephant. According to ARTIC's environmental impact report, about 90% of the station's train passengers would come from high-speed rail.

Re: Mass Transit 2 the Disneyland Resort

90% of passengers from HSR? How many people do they think will be riding that thing and getting off at Anaheim??
Best hope is to make the transit center, make it HSR-compatible, and start altering bus routes to pass through it.
The transit to/from Disneyland and Convention Center are still needed; however, the price of parking in the ARTIC lot would likely increase, to deter local folks from parking there.
