CARMAGEDDON Is Coming on July 15-17 Weekend - Are you Ready?

An early heads up that I'm surprised nobody has posted yet... And it's about time someone did, so I'm doing it.

The I-405 Freeway through the Hollywood Hills is going to be Totally Closed for the weekend starting Friday evening July 15 and all weekend Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th (*) between the US-101 Ventura Freeway and I-10 Santa Monica Freeway.

They are covering the freeway with dirt for padding, then demolishing one side of a poured concrete bridge (Mulholland Dr.) that goes over the freeway using Excavators tipped with hydraulic breakers, and dropping the broken concrete mess 60' onto the freeway surface, then they plan to have it all cleaned back up and repoened by mid-day Sunday. (*) Definitely by Monday early morning for the commute. (*)

(*) - I know the scope of work and have seen their timeline. IMHO: Yeah, Right, Suuuure they will. Unless they bail-out when they run out of time even if there's still bridge left, Do Not make any hard plans for Monday. Including work - ask your boss now about Telecommuting for the day. And if they manage to damage the freeway surface under the dirt...

Anyone planning on driving down to Disneyland that weekend Just Might want to be aware of this, because it's going to put massive pressure on the rest of the Greater L.A. freeway system - and the ripples might reach into Orange County even. Unless we can scare everyone away (1984 Olympics style) it's going to make a mess - hopefully not horrendously bad, but you'll know it.

Plan Ahead: Get down here a day early, or stay over a day later before you head home. For just this once, Fly into John Wayne or Long Beach instead of driving down. Loop around the scenic route instead of taking the short way straight down the I-5. Go hit Universal Studios Hollywood (which will be in the "traffic fallout zone") on Thursday or Tuesday instead.

KNX Newsradio 1070 AM is the go-to station for regional traffic, and they plan to be as on top of it as possible - and the News of the weekend will likely be about the closure too. Make sure you have a current Freeway System map with you, because your Navigator will be earning their pay in the right seat.

The Ventura Freeway through Downtown and the Santa Monica Freeway are likely going to be slammed as people try to go the shortest way around the closed section. All the "Secret" roads that the Locals usually use to avoid the freeway (Laurel Cyn, Coldwater Cyn, Sepulveda Bl, etc...) are expected to be a log-jam because they'll all try them at the same time...

And there will most likely be a ripple effect through the rest of the freeway and road system as people go further around to go around. Coming straight down I-5 from Northern California might not be far enough over to avoid the mess - you might have to cut around the 210 East to the 605 and go way around.

Anyone following the Coast Route would be well advised to take the 101 South and cut inland at the first opportunity, CA-23 North and CA-118 through Simi, then transition to I-210 east if the I-5 South is a mess.

Pacific Coast Highway? Between the beach traffic, the local residents, and this event, FUHGEDDABOUDIT. I predict a solid traffic jam starting at Point Mugu all the way, and then it will dump you onto the Santa Monica Fwy. for more sitting.

I'm putting this initially in the Disneyland section so it is seen by the tourists among us. All further discussions should be in the Travel Planning sub-section.

It's gonna be awful. Glad I live in Orange County. Thankfully, I don't head to LA too often.

Probably because it doesn't affect folks in or near the Anaheim Resort much. That's my guess.

I take the 91 to the 5 to get to Disneyland, but I'm not planning on going anywhere near freeways that weekend!

I think so because there may be some people that might be coming from that direction that have no idea about it.

    You'd be surprised.

I'm glad I dont go to school in Santa Monica anymore. I was on the 405 8 hours a week. What a nightmare that was.

Re: CARMAGEDDON Is Coming on July 15-17 Weekend - Are you Ready?

I take the 405 north to work (Six Flags) from Reseda (i.e. the tail end of the freeway), and they are still begging us to avoid it altogether, and even if we go directly from the 5, to head to work at least a half-hour earlier than usual. I've only been living in LA for two years, but yeah I can see the effect having this much gravity. Easily.

    Yipes.

It really doesn't have anything to do with Disneyland... at all.

Re: CARMAGEDDON Is Coming on July 15-17 Weekend - Are you Ready?

Thanks, Bruce. While I saw the notification signs mentioning this a couple weeks ago in LA, a lot of people who may be planning to visit from afar (and perhaps many in the area) are likely not aware of it. Even if this doesn't affect the immediate Disneyland area, it's still good to know as many visitors may be thinking of using that route. I'm sure many people will appreciate the heads-up.

And of course, since this is coming on very good authority from someone who knows his stuff, it's advice that should be heeded.

    Jetblue offers 'carmageddon' flyover:
Long beach to burbank for $4

    july 13, 2011 | 1:34pm

    BOOK FLIGHTS: JetBlue | CAR-MAGEDDON FLY-OVER

Jetblue airways is doing its part to help out commuters during this weekend's so-called carmageddon.

With the 405 freeway set to be closed from late friday until early monday because of construction, the airline said it would offer $4 fares each way from long beach airport to bob hope airport in burbank.

"fly jetblue between burbank and long beach this saturday (7/16) only!" the airline's website says. "fares are $4 each way so get on board quick -- book now through july 16 or while supplies last. Or for $5 each way customers can also enjoy an even more space seat on their carmageddon fly-over, which includes early boarding and early access to overhead bin space as well as a spacious seat with extra legroom -- limited quantity available on each flight."

"This will be our shortest commercial flight," jetblue spokewoman sharon jones told the times. "we thought this would be a fun and unique idea. We looked at it as a way to introduce our product to customers who have never joined jetblue."

Jetblue is offering two fights from long beach to burbank and two from burbank to long beach -- both on saturday.

The flights will take 20 minutes.

There have been warnings posted up here on NorCal freeways about it for several weeks now.
Have bicycle, will ride. Finished 2012 with 10,089 miles, 683 hours, and 482,000 feet of elevation gain.
    2013: 201 rides, 8171 miles, 544 hours, 480K feet.

It's a gimmick fare from JetBlue, but if it gets them positive publicity it'll work.

There are Air Charter firms ready any time to take you from Van Nuys to LAX to catch commercial flights, at around $100 a head plus free van transfer from the LAX Executive Terminal to the main concourse terminal of your choice.

And it costs less if you get more people flying together to take a larger charter plane together, spread out the costs. With the extra demand this weekend, that will be a whole lot easier.

All you need to do is give them an hour or two notice, and the charter company will see if they can fill a plane - or combine small groups and use a larger plane.
