An early heads up that I'm surprised nobody has posted yet... And it's about time someone did, so I'm doing it.
The I-405 Freeway through the Hollywood Hills is going to be Totally Closed for the weekend starting Friday evening July 15 and all weekend Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th (*) between the US-101 Ventura Freeway and I-10 Santa Monica Freeway.
They are covering the freeway with dirt for padding, then demolishing one side of a poured concrete bridge (Mulholland Dr.) that goes over the freeway using Excavators tipped with hydraulic breakers, and dropping the broken concrete mess 60' onto the freeway surface, then they plan to have it all cleaned back up and repoened by mid-day Sunday. (*) Definitely by Monday early morning for the commute. (*)
(*) - I know the scope of work and have seen their timeline. IMHO: Yeah, Right, Suuuure they will. Unless they bail-out when they run out of time even if there's still bridge left, Do Not make any hard plans for Monday. Including work - ask your boss now about Telecommuting for the day. And if they manage to damage the freeway surface under the dirt...
Anyone planning on driving down to Disneyland that weekend Just Might want to be aware of this, because it's going to put massive pressure on the rest of the Greater L.A. freeway system - and the ripples might reach into Orange County even. Unless we can scare everyone away (1984 Olympics style) it's going to make a mess - hopefully not horrendously bad, but you'll know it.
Plan Ahead: Get down here a day early, or stay over a day later before you head home. For just this once, Fly into John Wayne or Long Beach instead of driving down. Loop around the scenic route instead of taking the short way straight down the I-5. Go hit Universal Studios Hollywood (which will be in the "traffic fallout zone") on Thursday or Tuesday instead.
KNX Newsradio 1070 AM is the go-to station for regional traffic, and they plan to be as on top of it as possible - and the News of the weekend will likely be about the closure too. Make sure you have a current Freeway System map with you, because your Navigator will be earning their pay in the right seat.
The Ventura Freeway through Downtown and the Santa Monica Freeway are likely going to be slammed as people try to go the shortest way around the closed section. All the "Secret" roads that the Locals usually use to avoid the freeway (Laurel Cyn, Coldwater Cyn, Sepulveda Bl, etc...) are expected to be a log-jam because they'll all try them at the same time...
And there will most likely be a ripple effect through the rest of the freeway and road system as people go further around to go around. Coming straight down I-5 from Northern California might not be far enough over to avoid the mess - you might have to cut around the 210 East to the 605 and go way around.
Anyone following the Coast Route would be well advised to take the 101 South and cut inland at the first opportunity, CA-23 North and CA-118 through Simi, then transition to I-210 east if the I-5 South is a mess.
Pacific Coast Highway? Between the beach traffic, the local residents, and this event, FUHGEDDABOUDIT. I predict a solid traffic jam starting at Point Mugu all the way, and then it will dump you onto the Santa Monica Fwy. for more sitting.
I'm putting this initially in the Disneyland section so it is seen by the tourists among us. All further discussions should be in the Travel Planning sub-section.
