Talking August vs September and hotel questions

So it's been forever, March 2007 since I have been down to parks. Now I have 2 kids, 2 and 3, and we are ready to take them. I would like to go at a time when it's not so busy, and not so many rides are down. My friend told me that the first week of Sept, they close HM and SM for Halloween overlay, and I should go the last week of Aug. I see that the marathon is the 31st, so I don't want to be there that weekend, but I would like to be there on a Saturday simply for the late closure of the parks. Any idea what the hours will be for say the 22nd-27th of August? Is it a better idea to just go Monday to Friday so I avoid weekend crowds, if the hours are the same anyway?

Also, the hotels across the street. I have never stayed in any of them except the Ramada (yuck), and right now I am looking at Tropicana, Camelot, Desert Inn, and the Best Westerns. Desert Inn has the best rate for amount of room, but is it a decent place? The kids will be coming home early at night with my mom and probably spending a few hours during the day, so I want some place that isn't disgusting to hang out. Thanks so much for your help. I am so excited!

Find out when the last day the SoCal APs are blocked out, and go before that date.

Of those places I'd suggest the BW Main Gate first.

While late hours sound great, even when the park hours shorten a bit the last couple summers the "Summer Season" has run through the first week of September. So fireworks, Magical, were nightly, not in off season mode.

Well, now my mom tells me she would like cooler weather, so same friend suggested the week or 2 before Thanksgiving. So I think we are going to aim for the 12-17th, after Veterans day. She said it's not so crowded, decorated, most everything is operational and we can still see the fireworks on the weekend. Is this accurate?

I always go middle to end of September to early October mid week and generally seem to be okay crowd wise. Its been 4 years since I went last, but its never been overly crowded in this time frame.

I avoid weekends altogether, wont find me at the parks Fri to Sun at all anytime of the year.

Which one is the main gate? The Best Western website doesn't refer to any of them as main gate. I need to stay at one in the fall since I get discount at BW's and trying to figure out which is the closest.

Pretty sure that's the Park Place Inn.

Thanks, yes that is the one I meant to refer too. It's right across the street, and has a warm breakfast included.

Yep, that sounds about right. I always used to make a trip around this time for the reasons you mentioned!

I am sorry to be so nosy but, not being a parent, what does one do with children that young at Disneyland? Don't you just push them around in a stroller while they sleep or cry?
