Wow.
Ty Willingham was a terrible coach, and losing Locker for the year turned the Huskies from a bad team into an absolutely horrific team last year. USC suffered a typical letdown. This is not just a USC phenomenon. It happens over and over again. This year, look at, among other things, Oklahoma State losing at home to Houston after a big win. Florida State coming up with a big win after a tough loss and an embarrassingly narrow win over Jacksonville State. Injuries are big, too. Add Taylor Mays and Matt Barkley to the lineup and USC will be back to its old self, just as Oklahoma will be if they can get Bradford back under center.

I think Mustain has to be looking at a chance to start against the Cougars if Barkley is still not ready. I'm afraid Aaron Corp has irreparably hurt his standing at USC forever.

So was the last play before the half. Why not either throw it, or run the QB sneak that has worked about 7/7 times for the Trojans this year? The third down call at the end of the last USC drive was a bad call, but it probably is an indication of how little faith they had in Corp.

That's gotta be one of the longer run-on sentences I've ever seen around here. Even though we're talkin' sports here, it's still okay to use a bit of punctuation here and there.

And after what I saw of your team on opening night, I might say be careful what you wish for with the 'bring on Cal" stuff.

Loud one: check. Even ABC's cameras were all Blair Witchy. USC friend of mine went to the game two years ago, could not believe the noise level.
First half close: check.
Runaway by USC: no check.
U-Dub Defense came up strong. Even the coach got a penalty for running into the side judge. (I bet he's extremely hoarse, having to yell over the crowd. Corp looked bad. Mustain must be in a real doghouse for him not to go in. Or it's Carroll coddling Corp, "believing in him" so he'll have confidence in the next game he's in, whenever that might be.
Poor play-calling and execution was there last week, too. Gino Torreti was on Dan Patrick this morning (he had broadcast the USC-OSU game on radio) and was criticizing how Barkley had only one passing option or threw it away.

Re: College Football

USC will be just fine. They may drop a couple this year, but Barkley's the real deal, and they'll just roll on.

We who have a distaste for things Trojan just like to enjoy these small bumps in the road while we can.

And I know that the competition doesn't compare, but...for at least a week...my Bruins have a better overall record. I'm gonna enjoy it while I can!

Re: College Football

I figured we would have already heard a big bellow from our resident Oregon fan by now.

I guess a not-so-funny-thing happened to the Golden Bears on their way to next week's game with USC...

As I post this, it's 27-0 over Washington State in the 4th quarter.

No matter what, USC always has a great defense.

To me, the polls are still meaningless this early in the season. The Trojans didn't play all that well offensively against an inferior oppponent last night.

It's still too early to tell how good many schools really are.

Re: College Football

The polls are not as meaningless as you might think. Boise State getting in so high so early could be important. If Boise was ranked down where TCU and Houston are, by the end of the season, they wouldn't have a chance to pass one-loss teams like USC or Virginia Tech or Oklahoma.

Re: College Football

Well, you're both right in some sense:
1. They are meaningless at this point to determine who the best teams really are. (Evidence: top-polled teams losing to lesser-polled teams, every year.)
2. They are meaningful because future polls are based on past polls, thus the current poll is helping to determine the eventual bowl participants. (Evidence: every poll ever in college football.)

BSU still needs some help. One Texas loss to OU might do the trick.

Re: College Football

Of course it goes without saying that what we need is a playoff - and not the current "BS" system.

There's a playoff to determine every NCAA champion except in Division One college football. And you can't convince me that they couldn't find a way to make it work.
