1/6. Not a great day for upsets.

I'm not being defensive. That's what you're doing, in this post. Defending your team against my "attack" (actually, reasoned analysis, IMO). We'll discuss the 8-4 Jayhawks at the end of the regular season. Maybe they can get to the Big 12 Championship. Then, KU can ruin Texas' season. That would be nice. Alos, College Basketball is not too far away. There we'll see some mighty Jayhawks!

Re: College Football
That was a very exciting game yesterday, astro. That QB and the WR are likely going to the NFL someday. Never was KU out of it.
I'm still hoping for KU to ruin Texas's season.

Personally, I'm loving it as long as it lasts. 44-20 as of this moment, midway through the 4th. Not surprising that the Ducks would win - but wow, like this? Too much to hope for!

Re: College Football
Now where do we end up? Certainly not the Rose Bowl. We'd likely need three Oregon losses for that to happen. At a minimum, we'd need two (plus a weird multiple team tie scenario). I doubt they will lose again.
Fiesta Bowl? The four BCS at-large teams are going to be, in all likelihood, the SEC runnerup, TCU and/or Boise State, and one or two second-place teams from the Big XII, Big Ten, Big East, SEC or Pac-10. USC, at 10-2, would be attractive to the Fiesta Bowl or Sugar Bowl when compared to Ohio State (but not Penn State) from the Big Ten. They probably would be ahead of the ACC runnerup - unless the Sugar Bowl or Orange Bowl was interested in a 2-loss Miami. They are toast if Texas loses the Big XII championship game. The Longhorns would get the at-large bid for sure. Holiday Bowl? San Diego wouldn't benefit that much from the Trojans coming to town, but USC has never played this bowl, and it would be tempting for Holiday Bowl officials to take them to play, for example, the Sooners. Either would be an interesting option for me as a fan, although the January 4 Fiesta Bowl date stinks. It's the kids' first day back to school. If USC loses another game, it'll be the Sun Bowl. In El Paso. Blech. |

I've been to a bowl game in El Paso. It's finest claim to fame is that it is right across the river from murdertown Juarez.

Re: College Football
We had a great moment in sports betting tonight at East Carolina, where Virginia Tech was an 11½ point favorite.
Late in the game, East Carolina trailed 13-3, facing a third-and-13 from their own 16-yard line. They ran a short pass to the sideline, and the receiver got his hand on the ball but could not haul it in. This should have set up a 4th down punt with 2:25 to play, upon which Virginia Tech would run out the clock to win by 10. And fail to cover. However, Patrick Pinkney's deflected pass ended up in the hands of Hokie defensive back Rashad Carmichael, who held onto the ball for an interception and a Virginia Tech first down at the ECU 13-yard line. Three downs later, the Hokies' Matt Waldron booted an almost-meaningless 31-yard field goal. But it wasn't meaningless in Vegas. Final score: Virginia Tech 16, East Carolina 3. Covered. |

Re: College Football
It seems like a lot longer than 11 years ago, but in 1998 I clearly recall that UCLA, yes UCLA, was in line for a shot at the championship game, until they went down to Miami in December for a make-up game, and got sledgehammered by Edgerrin James and company at Miami, and it seems like it's been downhill, ever since.
Why is it, again, that everybody was so anxious to ride Bob Toledo out of town? And how is it that Norm Chow lost all that creative genius simply by moving across town. ![]() Yep, I think the Bruins would leap at the chance to play in El Paso now. Of course, they have about as much chance of making it back there this year as Marty Robbins does.
