You just figured that out? I wouldn't mind having Norv as a next-door neighbor.

Or an assistant coach.

But he's one of several coaches that just aren't head coaching material - he never has been. Same for Wade Phillips.

Makes one wistful for the old Marty Schottenheimer days. What's Bobby Ross doing nowadays?

Even though I picked the Colts to win tonight, you have to feel kind of bad for the Dolphins. I mean, they played probably the best game that they could play ... and still lost.

Goes to show, you can't give an amazing player like Manning even 15 minutes with the ball. He's gonna beat you.

And how many times have we heard the ex-jock, ex-coach "expert" TV analyst tell us, "the key to today/tonight's game is....time of possession. Whichever team is able to hold the ball the longest, and keep that other guy's explosive offense off the field - that's the key".

I am sure that all of you who have Miami in your time of possession fantasy leagues, are happy tonight.

Those Manning boys aren't bad, are they? And I've always wondered how good Archie could have been, if the free agent rules were in place back in his day.

I have Peyton as my fantasy QB, but my opponent this week had Clark!

Nay, RB. I was saying that BEFORE Norv ever came to the chargers! The guy had a losing record coming in and it seemed that they chose him simply because he was available. His play calling was horrific last year with COUNTLESS trips up the middle with an LT who just didn't have it any more. Run on the first two downs, get nothing, try to throw on third with an offensive line that couldn't keep out a pack of girl scouts.

And some on the Charger forum are still calling him a genius. It just boggles the mind.

[Begin rant] AND WHAT WAS HE THINKING ON THIRD DOWN WITH 8 SECONDS ON THE CLOCK IN THE RED ZONE BEFORE THE HALF??? A FIELD GOAL????? THEY STILL HAD ONE MORE SHOT!!!WHAT PLANET IS THIS MAN ON?? AND THAT LAST RUNNING PLAY WITH SPROLES????? [/End Rant}

Sorry for screaming. Between the horrific play calling and our non-existent defense, it doesn't look like a good year for the Chargers.

Re: Let's Talk Football - NFL 2009/2010

And they really need to change the "freeze the kicker" timeout rule.

On field goal tries, once the play clock reaches five seconds, that's it.

Dumb stunts like what Mike Shanahan (as I recall) started, and Wade the rodeo clown Phillips pulled again last night, are getting really tiresome IMHO.

Freezing the kicker is kinda like in baseball with a runner at third and no outs in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth. You intentionally walk the next two batters to get a force at every base.

It's an expected desperation move, that works maybe .001 of the time.

But it's gotten ridiculous, and it's time to change the rule.

I agree with this. Maybe it should become nill with 5 or 10 seconds left. Trying to time it to right before the foot hits the ball is ridiculous.

Sometimes you gotta take the garunteed points - I think it was the right call. 8 seconds isn't a lot if the play goes bad, and they were climbing back.

The last play wasn't a bad call either - it's just you can't let Ray Lewis go UNTOUCHED or that will happen every time.

Not only that, but somebody can get hurt. I would have found it HILARIOUS if when Phillip's called that time-out the Giants kicker would have missed then made the 2nd one.

I disagree. You have one of the better QB's in the league. tall recievers, etc. Role Rivers out, put one up in the Endzone to Gates or something, if nothing is there, you throw it away and kick the field goal. This is the NFL, you've got to at least TRY.

They had no time-outs. they already tried twice to throw the ball without success, and they were down by two scores. Risking the endzone again could have meant no points, and still being down two scores.

Instead they kick a FG they KNOW they can make, no risk of having the clock run out, and they go into the locker room down only 5 points.

Sure it's emotional to say you got so close and didn't get the TD and be upset about that - but you should be more upset they didn't realize the play clock time and the ensuing penalty that really cost them.

SD had 15 plays in the Red Zone (not counting their FG kicks). For those 15 plays, they had a combined total of 11 total yards, a sack, and TWO delay of game penalties.

Given that hindsight, do you really think it was better to risk no points at all?

Kicking was their best game in the Red Zone all day. They scored in the open field much better when they could spread the defense and get the 1on1.

In the first half of the game... you take the points. There is always a fight to win later, no need to be the 'all or nothing' in the first half.

For the record, I'm am not a Chargers fan (I'm a 49ers fan), I'm just speaking as a student of the game and a FOOTBALL fan. They should have tried again. If you "supposedly" have one of the better QB's in the league, have a team that talent-wise is one of the top teams you have to PROVE IT. They didn't.

Gotta agree with you on the first point. If there were, say, 12 seconds maybe I would've taken a shot. But otherwise, if you run out the clock and don't even get three, that's a downer going into the locker room. At least with the field goal, you feel like you've got some momentum.

As for the last play, I would like to have seen Norv call something different, but sometimes you just have to tip your cap (or helmet) to your opponent because Lewis is a great player who made a great play. And if they got the first down and came back to win, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

But you won that all-important "time of possession" game...
