Gee, a whole nine years without a title. The Dodgers - 21 years and counting. The Angels waited 40-plus years before getting their only one. Red Sox - 86 years. Cubs? Over 100 years and counting.

Nine whole years. How indeed did it feel, to win another title after all those years.

Nice to know that the long national nightmare is over.

Commenting on that aspect of it has nothing to do with hating...and I don't consider myself to be a "hater" of anything, and don't think I have used the word in any of these threads.

The nine-year thing is about perspective...and so many Yankee fans, and New Yorkers for that matter, who seem to have a lack of it when it comes to the rest of the country.

I enjoy Rick Reilly. Just happens we agree on this one.

Look, the Yankees played well. But isn't that what the Yankees are supposed to do? They paid their players almost twice as much as the Phillies team they beat -- $208M to $111M. Just the Yankees starting infield made more than 15 teams this year. Throw them a parade? I don't get it. So what? George Clooney got a girl, Paris Hilton slept in satin sheets last night and Bill Gates went to the bank. Call me when you've got some news.
Oh -- and the next Yankees fan who looks to the heavens and sighs happily, "It's been nine long years!" gets tied to the front of the 4 train and run into a wall. Nine years? Nine years is a cigarette break to most teams in MLB. Chicago Cubs fans are at 101 years and counting. Cleveland Indians' fans: 62. New York/San Francisco Giants: 55. Pittsburgh Pirates: 30. Gee, nine whole years? The Boston Red Sox waited 86 years for theirs. The Chicago White Sox -- 88! There are people in swine flu lines longer than nine years.

Arizona beat them in the series in 2001 when EVERYONE wanted the Yankees to win.

So i still hold onto that. It gets me through the times like these.

Now Barry, we all know that you root for all teams that play against the Yankees, so it's not too far a stretch to assume that you do indeed hate them.

I don't hate them, but I do indeed envy them, being a Cubs fan and only seeing a World Series victory in Chicago by the team on the opposite side of town which I also root for since it represents my town.

I do get tired of living in the second city. Second to New York, and most recently also second to teams on the west coast.

Not me. I had lots of sympathy for what city residents were dealing with. For what they whole country was dealing with. But they had videotape of winning the three previous years if they needed to see a Yankee win.

And I still say it's "strong dislike".

As far as great series go, I'd put that one up with the Atlanta-Minnesota 1991 (10-inning game 7), and 1975 Reds-Red Sox (Fisk HR in game 6)...Of course I loved 2002. The last three innings of game six especially - still give me chills to think about the comeback. Is Scott Spiezio available for a contract?

As I've said before, and it's worth repeating, it doesn't really come down just to money. No matter how much a team spends on it's players, they still have to go out and win the games, and win when it counts.

A perfect example of this is right across the East River in Queens. The Mets spent a bundle on their team, and finished pathetically.
