ESPN's 30 for 30

Has anybody else been watching these amazing documentaries that ESPN is doing for their 30th anniversary?

Basically, they are having 30 filmmakers do a documentary about sports or a major sports event.

Tonight is the premiere of the documenatry about Len Bias.

I watched the one about the USFL last week and it was amazingly good. Stupid Donald Trump.

If you haven't checked them out you should.

Here is the link.

Re: ESPN's 30 for 30

I've watched a couple.
The Gretzky one was eye-opening, but way too much artificial drama footage. Like every shot of Gretzky in the Forum, looking up and around. More hockey would have been preferred.

USFL was interesting. Trump at his Trumpiest, then AND now.
Missed the Len Bias one. I'll have to check listings for repeats.

Colts band; heard of their saga before, and a whole hour of pathetic people with misplaced loyalties can be skipped. So I skipped it.

I have the Ali-Holmes one on the TiVo.

Trouble is, they're only shown one time...and I'm in the digital dark ages where I can only record one show at a time with my DVR...and my wife occasionally gets a vote, you know. (We can watch a recorded show when one is recording, but that's it.)

You would figure that they could repeat on ESPN 2 a time or two, or Classic...although OFF TOPIC I notice that they've moved "Classic" into a different pay package now...

I have few complaints with DirecTV. I've been a happy customer for ten years. But this and the Versus thing for hockey has me angered a bit.

Back to topic. I'll have to start watching the rest when I can.

I also have watched the Ali-Holmes document and coming from a non-boxing fan it was entertaining.

They are repeated. Usually on ESPN2 the same night but later on, and then the following day on ESPN2, then they also show up on ESPN Classic.

And I've seen both the USFL one and the Ali-Holmes one, both amazing.

Thanks for the correction. I was very much mistaken about that.

I'll probably be watching next Monday's showing of the Bias piece. I very well remember working on the air the morning when that story broke on the AP wire - it was such a shocker. He was the guy that was going to keep the Celtic dynasty going - they'd just won the NBA title (their third of the 80's), got Bias in the draft, and he was going to be joining Bird, McHale and company...who knows how good they would have stayed.

And the drug message was very strong. Looking forward to seeing it, and a repeat of the others I missed.
