    2011 Tour de France

Things are not going well for defending champion Alberto Contador. Caught by a crash, he's now over a minute behind his closest rivals, and he is expected to lose more time in tomorrow's team time trial. This only after the first day. It's going to be an interesting tour.

    2013: 201 rides, 8171 miles, 544 hours, 480K feet.

The team time trial has put Thor Husvold in yellow and Cadel Evans in third. Contador has lost more time.

American Tyler Farrar takes stage 3 on Independence Day, saluting friend and fallen cyclist Wouter Weylandt, who crashed and died last May in the Giro d'Italia. Husvold is still in yellow.

Today's stage was peppered with crashes. Cavendish went on to win the stage. Husvold remains in yellow.

It's been a rough couple days for Team Radio Shack. Levi Leipheimer slipped and fell on wet pavement, putting him behind by over a minute. Another flat stage for the sprinters tomorrow.

    Re: 2011 Tour de France

Another bad day for Radio Shack. Chris Horner broke his nose and probably had a concussion but was able to finish 12 minutes behind the leaders. It's undetermined if he will race tomorrow. Leipheimer lost time in the same crash. Andreas Kloden is the only viable GC contender left on the team. Bradley Wiggens of Team Sky Procycling broke his collarbone in the same crash and had to abandon. Tom Boonen also abandoned today, a result from injuries sustained two days ago.

In brighter news, Mark Cavendish won the stage. Hushovld is still in yellow, Evans is second, and the Schleck brothers are still unscathed.

The first week of the Tour has been brutal. Tomorrow is the first real mountain stage.

    Re: 2011 Tour de France

More news on Chris Horner. They showed video of him being taken away in an ambulance. He kept asking, "Did I finish?" He was confused and disoriented. That he was able to ride 20 miles to the finish line is remarkable. A brain scan revealed no hemorrhages, but he has a broken nose and a bruised calf. He's spending the night in the hospital, and it's unlikely he'll start tomorrow.

    Re: 2011 Tour de France

Today's stage saw Rui Costa take the win with Tejay Van Garderen driving the breakaway, taking most of the mountain points. The young American (riding his first TdF) will wear both the spotted jersey for King of the Mountains and a red number for most aggressive rider. No change in the overall, with Thor Hushovd still in the lead by one second over Cadel Evens.

    Re: 2011 Tour de France

Today is a rest day. With so many injured riders, it's about time. Yesterday was particularly bloody. Johnny Hoogerland managed to finish the stage after being catapulted into a barbed wire fence and ripped to shreds. Alexandre Vinokourov had to abandon with a broken femur. He was one of seven or eight riders who did not finish the stage.

    Re: 2011 Tour de France

Few people would have predicted that Cadel Evans would be at the top step of the podium. He rode smart and stayed out of trouble. Next to Contador, Andy Schleck was a big favorite. He and his brother Frank ended up second and third.
