They did it a tad early, but what the heck!
Tommy deserves an extra-big celebration. Regardless of my feelings for the Dodgers, I recognize him as a great manager, a very inspirational leader, and one of baseball's greatest ambassadors.LOS ANGELES -- The birthday cake was as wide as the Dodger Stadium batter's box, white cream and white ribbons on two tiers, a picture of Tommy Lasorda in his Dodger blues in the middle of it, vintage from those Hall of Fame managerial days, circa 1977 to 1996.
Even though Lasorda's 80th birthday is a week from Saturday, when the team is in Arizona, it was an occasion for a double-barreled celebration on Friday night before the Dodgers played the Diamondbacks. First of all, there was the big birthday bash, of course. And secondly, it's the 10-year anniversary of Lasorda's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
An early happy 80th, Tommy.
