    iPod Touch or Notebook?

I'm looking at getting an iPod Touch or a notebook to use when I don't want to bring a laptop. probably get it early January.

can an iPod Touch use most of the apps that load onto the iPhone? some of the games I've seen on the iPhone look interesting.

is there a way to get photo files from your camera to the iPod Touch without using a computer?

from what I've been reading most of the newer notebooks are coming out with Windows 7 Starter and it cost $80 to upgrade to the Home version.

are there any confirmed open wireless spots inside the parks?

I am assuming you mean netbook. You have not really described what you are looking to do with either device. Just surf and do email or what?

The iPod touch runs the iPhone OS and is capable of running the iPhone apps.

the touch has no 3G 'over the air' connectivity tho - only wifi. So you'll be limited to areas where you can hop on wifi or pay for wifi. A iPhone or netbook+3g card can get on the net anywhere.

The touch is of limited value without network connectivity - its a better ipod, but thats about it. If you can get wifi enough to make it worth it is a opinion that we can't answer for you. But in the parks? Definitely no free wifi internet (or paid for that matter).

Flynn hit the nail on the head. If you go the iTouch route, you might want to invest in MobileMe--but you can again only sync all of your files when in a wifi hotspot. The netbook is obviously heavier and you have load it up, log on and then treat it just like laptop. A really small, neck craneing laptop.

I would know, I elected to go the route of buying them both when my Palm T/X bought the farm.

May I ask what you are doing that you would need either? I'm a teacher, so I need schedules and contacts--but not necessarily a phone (I don't use my personal phone for contacting parents...).

Anyways, that's where I'm coming from.

    Re: iPod Touch or Notebook?

not looking at getting a netbook. I don't need to be connected all the time.

I use a Motorola Razr so an iPhone seems huge. I don't think I want to carry that around with me all the time. also, my monthly bill would be about 2-1/2 times what I pay now.

right now when I travel I take a laptop when I can, but it is getting old and slow, and with luggage and carry-on restrictions I wanted to go smaller and lighter. I usually stay at hotels with Wi-Fi and use the laptop to surf the web, email, check schedules and look for restaurants and shops.

right now I still use a Palm Zire to listen to music when I'm traveling or waiting in long lines, so having an iPod Touch would take care of that, but I don't think there is a way to get photos or video off a camera flash card to email them from the iPod Touch.

if I get a notebook, I probably wouldn't take that into the parks, but could use it at the hotel to look at photos and video on a larger screen and email then if I wanted to.

A netbook does not have to have the 3G access if you do not want to pay for it every month. They come with built in WiFi too.

A laptop and a notebook are the same thing. It seems you want something smaller and more portable.

I have seen SD card devices for the iPod touch, but am unfamiliar with them. The iPod touch was expected to get a camera when the iPhone 3GS and new iPod nano were released. That update is still expected, but no indication on when it would finally be implemented.

The distinctions between the two are rarely ever made today. I cannot even think of a company that does not sell either laptops or notebooks.

    Re: iPod Touch or Notebook?

sorry, I didn't mean to start a range war here.

I have to say that it is from some misinformation from some store displays and some misunderstanding on my part. I was under the impression that a "netbook" had the WiFi and 3G built-in (and monthly service fee) and the "notebook" just had WiFi onboard. I stand (sit actually) corrected.

so anyway, I trying to decide between getting a small laptop with WiFi or an iPod Touch.

I had a chance to use an iPhone today to try and lookup some information on the web. I have to say that it wasn't as easy as I would like, I guess as with all things it takes awhile to get used to it.

    Re: iPod Touch or Notebook?

    Just for clarification for everyone...

A netbook is basically a tiny laptop, which makes it lighter and easier to carry around. Most netbooks have 10"-13" screens. Anything bigger than that, then you're in the laptop/notebook category. Netbooks are mainly for basic email and internet (though I know people who do a bit more like running Office & the like, but they're not made for extreme gamers) and have smaller hard drives (and usually no CD/DVD drive... an external drive would be needed) and usually only have 1GB of RAM (though there are some that sport 2GB). They also mostly run on either Windows XP or Linux Unbuntu (sp), though some newer netbooks have Windows 7 basic. Netbooks have wifi cards, but they don't come with 3G cell phone internet access (basically being able to get online even if you're not in a wifi hotspot) unless you pay for an external adapter and the service.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: iPod Touch or Notebook?

There are no strict definitions here - only examples.

The netbooks are the ultra small laptops that generally started from the Intel Atom processor platform. They tend to be focused on internet terminals/simple processing. Their RAM setups, etc are limitations of the Atom platform which is why you see such consistency. What differentiates them from a traditional ultra-thin laptop is they are built on the simplified Atom platform which allows much lower prices - but at the trade off of reduced features and performance. But the idea of a $399 laptop usually persuades people vs a $3,000 Macbook Air

They tend to have no removable drive access (so no floppys or CD drives) internally and may have 3G added to them as well. The small size plus 3G 'anywhere' internet is a tempting business model. Some mobile providers around the world give away a netbook (much like they do a mobile phone) at subsidized prices as a way to push wireless access plans.

You have the ultra small, limited 'netbooks' then then everything else are laptops/notebooks. It's potato, potatoe on laptop vs notebook.
