Have you tried brightening it from the buttons on the laptop? On Dell you just push FN and then the up arrow to brighten it. Which reminds me of a fun trick using buttons close by to rotate the screen so everything is sideways or upside down, great for April Fools..

What brand? If it's an Apple, you can just take it to the Genius Bar and they'll diagnose it for free.

Have you checked your power scheme settings?

It's not impossible if you plug a monitor into the monitor outlet in back...

from what it sounds like, this isn't a software-based problem.. and the problem lies within the actual backlight itself. meaning you'd have to replace the backlight or the screen entirely.

what Sambo suggested will work: you'll be able to see the settings on an external monitor and make changes there.. but it really doesn't sound like it's on the software side of things (even at the dimmest software settings, the screen should still be readable without an external display)

if you can stomach keeping an external display connected permanently, it would also 'solve' the problem... but it turns your laptop into a desktop and rids it of all portability.

Yes - I was suggesting the external monitor to determine if the hardware/video on the motherboard was an issue - apparently it is fine - and to allow you to see if the software was it - which it wasn't.

The troubleshooting would determine if it was indeed the display itself - which is seems to be.

Good luck with the panel replacement.
