    Build Your Own Computer?

Ah, ok... so it looks like I'm going to have to get a new computer.
But I can't really afford one.
I was pricing computers online yesterday and it seems like they all come with too much stuff.
I have a monitor. I have a DVD/CD burner (only a year old), a keyboard, etc. All I need is a bigger hard drive and a faster processor.

Is there some place I can get just the basics - just the shell with a processor, motherboard and a hard drive for cheaper than the whole package? Everything else I have and can install myself.

    Thanks.
    Good morning, son

Good morning neverneverland!! say I love that avatar !!! to funny!
do you have some one who could build you on, or will you be doing this your self?I bought one off ebay once, a very good computer and they come bare bones . I see some are awsome priced and you do not have to have all the stuff come with it. just the processer and such. Make sure who ever you buy from is a reputable dealer

Anything for a computer, from the casing to the smallest chips, can be bought new. Cases, especially, are big business, especially amongst gamers.

Go to the biggest computer store you can find. They'll have everything you need.

    Re: Build Your Own Computer?

Hola.... the easiest way to do it is go to Fry's Electronics (the Burbank one is walking distance from the airport/Y!/etc.) and purchase a new motherboard/chipset (~$99+), and many deals can be found on hardrives in their in-store circular (~$60 for a 150GB HDD, perhaps cheaper sometimes). If your case is a standard ITX, any competent computer builder should be able to swap out everything and get things running within a few hours or less.

I recommend Fry's for experts - do your homework before you buy. Read the ratings, check out the Tom's Hardware website for reviews, etc.

Do all this before you buy so you know what will work and what won't. But you can buy each individual piece of your PC - from the power supply to the CPU. That's how I built mine.

    Re: Build Your Own Computer?

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! (And sorry this is in the wrong forum - I asked to have it moved but I guess that he didn't do it before he left. )

I will check eBay (didn't think of that!). I wasn't sure if an electronics store was a good place to go to - everything online is package deals.

Also Fry's - I actually know someone who works in one, der. I'll talk to her. I am competent enough to put it together myself.

tom's hardware - i'll look into that site, thanks!

    You guys rock!

Another place to look is http://www.pricewatch.com/

Lots of good prices, and semi-built systems!

    Re: Build Your Own Computer?

Just a caveat about Fry's: they stick returned material back on the shelves as "open boxes". They have a price reduction and have a little sticker stating that the product has already been opened and the reduced price. However, they are often missing pieces or are non-functional. However, if you know what you're looking for, Fry's is the place to go!

I actually prefer the one in Canoga Park to the one in Burbank slightly. The one in Manhattan Beach is tiny, cramped, and has a horrible parking lot. The City of Industry one is very nice and the new one in Ontario is also very nice. I haven't been to the ones in Anaheim or Fountain Valley, so I can't tell you about those, but hopefully I'll be going to them soon.
    Woof!

I like Fry's but another place worth checking is usually, P C Club. If you have a Comp USA in your town there is probably one very close by. (at least they are next to or near all the Comp USA's I know of).

I forgot about that place. Also, if you're looking to get stuff online, you could save even more money. eBay, New Egg, Price Grabber and Froogle Searching could get the needed parts for you cheaper than any B&M store.

BTW, there's also the Computer Show at Fairplex Pomona every few months or so. It's a little drive, but they usually have some good deals, too...

The Yorba Linda (Anaheim) Fry's is nicer than the Fountain Valley one.

Also, MicroCenter in Santa Ana is a good place to go to - off the 55 and Edinger.

Sorry that it took me so long to move the thread, but it looks like you have gotten a lot of great responses already.

FYI - I also like MicroCenter in Santa Ana (you can see it from the 55 fwy)
