    Virus Checkers?

Ok, my Norton expires in a few weeks and I'd like to try something else.
    any suggestions?

    is Mcafee good?
Anything cheaper but just as effective?
    TIA!

AVG is one of the best antivirus programs out there, and they have a good FREE version. Its also one of the av programs I've had the least problems with!

    Google search 'AVG antivirus'.

A word of warning - Download and use the latest Uninstaller program for Norton from their website, or you will open yourself up to a raft of very nasty problems. "Reload Windows" type problems...

If you try using the Windows Uninstaller to remove it, NAV leaves little bits of itself all over your system, and these chunks of code will misbehave and cause serious misery.

McAfee's fine, Panda Titanium is fine, AVG is fine. But Norton "doesn't play well with others".

Computer Associates has this nasty habit - they buy 'mature' software packages from other companies (in this case, from Peter Norton) for cheap that is getting reliable renewal and subscription income, and will only require minimal maintenance investment. And they proceed to milk every dollar they can out of it.

For a while, they were paying Peter Norton an annual fee to act as a figurehead for that division, but that's long over. And from what I've heard in the past, PN is NOT happy what they've done with the products carrying his name. (Wally Amos of "Famous Amos" got burned like that, too.)

Which is probably why Computer Associates resorted to offering the Norton "3 Months Free" deals that are thrown in on a New PC Purchase, because then they figure once you have installed their package they've got you for life. On the contrary, it's worth exactly what you paid for it, which is zippo.

It will still run, but it won't download any updates for newly discovered exploits. If you get nailed by a new one, you're on your own.

And the "Nag Screens" to get you to renew your AV subscription will quickly drive you insane...

Thanks Bruce! I will definately do that!

I paid for Norton, but it corrupted, so I ended up (accidently) getting 4 more months free by reinstalling it. So I can't complain TOO much

Sometimes, instead of Renewing your Subscription, Symantec give you the option to Upgrade to a newer BETTER version of your product. When I first purchaed this computer, It came with Norton AntiVirus 2002. When it expired It gave me the option to Renew, upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2003 or upgrade to Norton SystemWorks 2003 which is a much better program than Norton AntiVirus, which is included in SystemWorks. Today I have Systemworks 2006...Just by upgrading ever so often.
